Food and service were excellent! We used to live in Oakland where we had tons of options for Ethiopian food, so we have high expectations when we try new places. So glad we decided to try this place instead of waiting forever at the popular place across the street. It did not disappoint! Worth checking out!
If you want real authentic Ethiopian food in a very intimate atmosphere this is the place to go.Food was beyond excellent, owners are delightful and the entire experience was absolutely wonderfulDefinitely 5 star. Don’t let the outside intimidate you. The food is fabulous.
The food is delicious (had lamb tibs and beef awaze and the veggie platter, all delicious). Portion sizes are good. Service is good. We showed up with a group of ten and they were very accommodating and were able to seat us very quickly. Definitely a hidden gem. Try the honey wine!
As an Ethiopian myself ,I would definitely suggest this spot to my friends. My husband and I were visiting ATL and landed at the best Ethiopian/Eritrean restaurant! We have had other Ethiopian restaurant experience in the area before but hands down this is the best.Very authentic,it’s literally the same experience as if you are in Ethiopia! That says a lot! We finally have landed our spot whenever we visit ATL. Can’t wait to comeback again! We ordered carry-out but the atmosphere is nice,of course my people are nice and professional so you get the best service!
BAHEL was delicious. I forgot to take a pics of my food. I had chicken with the spicy red sauce. Salad and I had rice as well. Alone with the bread. I had the Ethiopian experience. It was awesome, Healthy food. I had ginger tea with honey 🍯. I am still satisfied 6 hours later.
About last night: I try Ethiopian food all across the country, and this was not Ethiopian food. The only thing that taste remotely authentic were the green beans. The yellow lentils were stiff, dry and not hot. The red lentils were runny. The collard greens looked and taste like they came out of a can. Not sure how to describe the cabbage. To top it off they charge $3.00 for injera that is supposed to come with the meal per the menu and when I asked about the charges on my receipt, the host said its gluten free and expensive to make 🤔 Injera is naturally gluten free and is not expensive to make and comes with the meal per the menu. Food overall was not hot. Will not return.
Great hole in the wall. There are a couple Ethiopian spots in this area. Its very small inside. The food and atmosphere seemed authentic to me. I really enjoyed my dish. I ordered the char grilled beef with a side of lentils. My waitress was very friendly and polite. I would eat here again.
Bahel is one of the very few restaurants in Atlanta that we ALWAYS come back to whenever visiting Atlanta. We first started going there over ten years ago, and loving Ethiopian food as we do, we’ve tried almost every other Ethiopian restaurant in the city (over twenty-five as of about five years ago). The food here is superb—with a cook trained in the tradition of the most famous region in Ethiopia, renowned for its “gomen besiga” (collard greens with beef) and for its shiro. Their fried fish smothered with a sort of roux made from shiro, stewed onion, tomatoes and green peppers is an original and must be tasted to be believed. Finally, if you’re a coffee lover you probably already know that the origin of coffee is Ethiopia. (Even the name “kava” — from which the word “coffee” is derived is the name of the province in Ethiopia where coffee is first known to have been grown and drunk. At Bahel they still serve coffee Ethiopian style and roasting it from green beans on the spot. The aroma is heavenly, as In sure you can imagine. The way they serve it constitutes an experience you won’t want to miss. Check out my photos and videos below.Meanwhile, their tasteful ambience (don’t miss their cozy back room and its special decor, suitable for private parties and small groups) and gracious staff render this a place worth visiting over and over again—which we do, and will for years to come. Please note that the restaurant is now under new management as former owner, Sabele, has retired. One of her longest servers, Winnie, and her husband, Abraham, have retained their dedicated cook, Rosa, and join her in serving some of the best dishes ever! (Same menu, same extraordinary flavors, with maybe even an extra loving touch. Note, also, that they have improved the ambience with some of their own loving additions.
If there were no other good restaurant options, Id come back.I love Ethiopian food. The options are standard and cost about $12 to $16 or so each. The servers arent so friendly. The food came out about 3 minutes after we ordered. The lamb tibs tasted like lamb, which I havent experienced at other Ethiopian restaurants. The injera was good, but not amazing. The tibs didnt have much sauce, and didnt have the flavor Im used to having. My wife said hers was more salty than she likes.
The place was clean. The service was good. Our waiter was was very polite and attentive. The food was good. I liked the injera. We had the Lamb & Chicken tibs with salad. The presentation was nice. The only downfall to the whole meal was I was feasted on by a mosquito, so dont sit next to the window.
Located in a small, unassuming strip mall is one of the better Ethiopian restaurants in Atlanta. At one point, Bahel was one of about 4 different Ethiopian spots at the Briarcliff intersection. A couple have closed since then yet Bahel remains. The service is always on point. And if the owner is there, he will usually come over to your table to ask how everything is. The waiters are always friendly as well. There are always vegetarian options with Ethiopian cuisine. One vegetarian item that isn’t commonly offered at Ethiopian restaurants as part of their vegetarian combo is Fasolia (green beans and carrots). Bahel offers it as part of their and it is truly delicious. If you’re looking for authentic and reasonably priced Ethiopian cuisine and good service, Bahel is the spot.
We usually go to another Ethiopian restaurant across the street but they were so packed we wound up here and we are very glad we did! Amazing food and at an even better price! The staff is very friendly and the portions are large. We could not finish a for 2 portion but it made a great lunch the next day. We will definitely return here!
Desta refused to honor my group’s reservation, so we walked literally across the street to Bahel and were immediately seated. Haven eaten at Desta’s before, I can say with certainty that the food is better at Bahel’s and the service is significantly better. I highly recommend people to go here over Desta. If you want alcohol with the meal try the honeyed wine, it’s a mead-like wine that is delicious. My group got most of the main dishes, and in particular the beef awaze tibs was excellent.
This restaurant was phenomenal. I went with my class for a school function and not only was the food delicious but it was authentic with an incredibly interesting story behind it. The owner, Woiney, was so kind and willing to share her story with us. She is from Ethiopia, and she shared that she wants everyone to experience real, authentic Ethiopian cuisine; and that we did experience. I ordered the Lamb Tibs (which was delicious and perfectly cooked), while my classmate sitting adjacent to me ordered the Short Rib Tibs which came on a sizzling plate and she shared that the seasoning on the meat was perfectly done and so interesting! Aside from the food, the restaurant itself is super cool. With interesting artwork and music playing throughout the room, it really is an interesting place. 10/10 recommend!!
Food is fine, but it is tooooooo slow. Just made a single order and there are a few guests in the restaurant. However, I did not expect to wait almost an hour with staff being impatient and indifferent to me. Would not recommend it unless you wanna wait for an hour to enjoy your meal.
So very good! I had the vegetarian plate and it had several different vegetable dishes and what I can describe as rolled sourdough flatbread. First time trying Ethiopian cuisine for me, and if that’s you I suggest you ask a staff member for recommendations. It’s always a good day to try new things!
I came here about one week ago (last Saturday) with my family and it was wonderful. We came at around 8 PM and hadnt eaten much else so the wonderful food here was a great way to fill up our stomachs. We ordered the lamb tibs, fish with shiro, and 5 vegetable combo. All were exceptional. The lamb was seasoned perfectly and was made even better by the injera bread. The fish was nice and crispy and was really complimented by the sauce. The vegetable combo was a nice thing to eat with the other dishes. The generally small location made it feel homey and all of the polite and dedicated waiters assisted that feeling. I would rate six stars if I could and I would heavily recommend this to anyone in the Atlanta area (even if you want to be cheaper as all of this had a relatively small price of $50 compared to our hotel food and other businesses). Thank you for great food :).
I dont like eating out too much anymore if its food that I can cook.. well I have never made Ethiopian food and I will gladly leave it up to Bahel. The fish tibs meal was delicious! The stew was so flavorful and the veggies were cooked and seasoned to perfection. Noshing with friends always turns up the experience even more! So, get your friends together and head over to Bahel.. The service is awesome too!
I actually liked the food at Bahel more than I did at a certain very popular spot across the street ;) The food came super fast, server was friendly and sweet. The feel at Bahel is also a bit more intimate as it is smaller, and the view from their patio is lovely at sunset. Id return to Bahel before I’d return to another Ethiopian restaurant.
Im a defacto Atlanta person who visits monthly because my grandbabes are there. I cant wait for my next visit to Atlanta so that I can stop through for my vegan Ethiopian food fix, just off Clairmont road near I-85S.EVERYTHING is delicious, including the water! Shared a sampler platter with a colleague , which was insanely flavorful and beautifully presented.I dont yet know the names of the foods, but I also had a vegan chocolate truffle-like dessert ... and had an appetizer that was a triangular shaped, deep fried veggie-stuffed shell with a knock-uour-socks-off sauce. Honestly, the service is incredible, food is joyful and with COVID rising, the outdoor seating was appreciated. So yes, the owners will know me ... and Im sending anyone who appreciates the best of the best in Ethiopian cuisine in Atlanta area. I also like the other Ethiopian restaurant across the street, but keeping it 💯, I loved everything about Bahel and will opt to promote this small business in these uncertain times, as they remain committed to serving quality and simply delicious foods. Bye bye for now 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🌟
Delicious food. We had the vegetarian combo and the lamb. We liked every single item on the plate. A class above the already outstanding Ethiopian competition in the area. They took their time to cook the food and this took a while, so dont go if you have a plane to catch, but for us the wait was well worth, every second of it. Outstanding!
My wife and I love Ethiopian food. We used to go to Queen of Sheba until they closed a few years back. We tried just about every place in town and nothing measured up until we tried Bahel tonight. The seasonal vegetarian platter was fantastic. It was a wonderful variety of dishes and a plentiful portion. And they honestly make the best collards Ive ever had. I highly recommend it.
I visited Bahel last night on the recommendation of a friend. I ordered lamb and chicken tibs, collards, and red lentils. Outstanding! All of it. Im glad I ordered enough to have more today.I usually post pictures with my reviews. However, I was hungry and the aromas wafting from my takeout containers had me rushing to dig in. My plating was picture perfect and I wont sully the deliciousness by publishing pics that wont do the food justice.Definitely going back.
Absolutley loved this place. I went with a friend who is quite familiar with Ethiopian cuisine so she did the ordering. We shared a huge platter of injera, beef tibs, fish, string beans, cabbage, and collard greens. We also had a side of samosas with coffee.Everything was cooked so well and seasoned so nicely. It was a hearty meal so save your appetite. The only thing I was not very fond of was the fish. I absolutely love the way they cooked their veggies. In total we paid together $45 for a platter with two sides of meat (meat and fish), about 3 sides, samosas, and coffee to end our meal.It was well worth it. Ive been to one other Ethiopian restaurant in the Atlanta area, and I can tell you this one is the better of the two.
Excellent food. Abraham provided great, friendly service. Restaurant held the birthday cake we brought with us to celebrate. Very accommodating.Atmosphere is informal but clean and neat. Most definitely would dine he again.Food is fresh and flavorful. We ordered a sampling of the beef, chicken and lamb and a platter of the vegetable options. There were 8 of us and none left hungry.
Located next to a biggy like Desta Ethiopian and running successfully. The food here is amazing and the spice level is just so perfect that it will make your nose run (When asked for the spiciest). The service is great and the staff needs were great accommodating us with smile.Would visit again.
I just had a terrible experience. Food is good but they really need to train their server better. I asked for the to go box and put my leftover lamb tibs (half of the entree and the full entree is $14) into the box. However I forgot to bring the box with me when I left. I was back 5 minutes later and the server said she thought I didn’t want it so she threw it away. 1- I wouldn’t have asked for a to go box and spent time to put the food in there if I didn’t want it. 2- she could have waited for at least an hour before she threw it away. 3- she could have offered to make another meal or even half but she did nothing. I would absolutely not come to this place for dinner if I knew I would waste $7 or pay $14 for half of the food.
Delicious Ethiopian food even vegans and vegetarians can enjoy, the service is friendly and is a small business. I would recommend it to anyone looking for Ethiopian food without the price or busy atmosphere of the bigger restaurants. A good cup of their coffee to top off you meal is probably a good idea.
Honestly I think I probably just had a bad experience or not the right dish, because Im sure this place must be better than my review. The place had lots of Ethiopians in it which always makes me feel good if Im trying a dish from another country or culture that the people from that culture actually like to eat there as well! I like the coziness of it, and they were super friendly, but the Injera bread in my dish was cold like right out of the refrigerator and my friend from Ethiopia said it should not have been. It was weird using my fingers to eat my food that was hot with this cold bread. Its all I could think about actually. Ill try something different next time.
The people are so nice and thier food is so good. I looked them up on Google, when I got thier, it was a little storefront place with what appeared to be no customers inside...and across the street, I saw a booming Ethiopian restaurant so, I left and went thier. My mind said, No; you dont want to go thier, they look too big for my pocket (the website had s.all portions. I drove back over to this one and I am so happy that I did. They actually had customers seated in the back area.
Best Ethiopian Ive had so far in Atlanta! The misir wot is perfect (better than my homemade). Food is served at a better temperature than luke warm which seems to be the norm elsewhere. Great friendly informative (and covid conscious) service by Yonathon. I ordered Sambusa appetizer (lentil filled pastry) light and crisp with a sauce that sounds like amaze (new staple in my house right next to Sriracha and Tom Yum paste) Then the vegetable (vegetarian) sampler (Yetsom Beyaynetu). If youve never had Ethiopian foods and like Indian foods youll find this place to be a great option and yes , you can ask for a fork. Oh... Try their coffee, that alone is worth a visit.
Bahel offers the best traditional Ethiopian cuisine in Greater Atlanta. The staff is especially friendly and most helpful in helping making your selections. The injera is rich and consistent, the vegetables and rosemary are served fresh, and the meats are nicely flavored. Make sure you share what you order, eat with your hands and take friends and family.
We have eaten Ethiopian all over the country. For Atlanta there are a few that we like. Our #1 spot here is Bahel. We wanted carryout before the football game. Didnt want our Injera to soak up the juice from the Lamb Tibs YUM. We brought our own to-go container they were so nice to pack our food up for us. The staff is always polite and greet you with a smile. Needless to say we had a very good football Sunday that day.Thank you Bethel
I got the lamb tibs, which were delicious. Our waitress showed us how to use the injera (spongy, sourdough-y flatbread) to scoop up the lamb.My friend got the vegetarian combo, which came with eight different sides. Despite it being vegetarian, it was a very generous amount of food and she couldnt even finish it. For all that it comes with, it was a very good price. Her favorite sides were the split lentil sauce and yellow peas sauce.Bahel (pronounced BAH-hull) is a great, unassuming little restaurant in a shopping strip. Dont let the shopping center fool you! Its great food at a great price.
Place is nice, food is great, service is good as well. If you are a vegiterian, try the vegi combo, if you are not, try the kitfo, which is similar to steak tartar, make sure you specify if you want it raw, midium or well cooked. It is made with their special spices. Also i would the dereq tibs is amazing.
Went to Bahel tonite for dinner and it will be the first and last time. Food was okay but the lady who served us was not. We were seated right at the entrance and every time the door opened, I was really cold. I asked her if we could move to the inside area and she lied to me saying that it is full. We saw several other people go to the back area. Very disappointed with the way she treated us.
The food was good, but staff was irritable and the food took a long time even though there wasnt many people. The atmosphere was dim and the infrastructure was old (cracked and stained floors, sticky tables.) I would advise you to go to Desta across the street instead.
My wife is Habesha by birth (Habesha & Italian). Im Habesha by adoption. ;-)The food at Bahel is the best! The injera is made with real teff flour and is perfect. The shiro could have used a little more heat, but the wats were FANTASTIC! Our family of 5 spent $20 on the veggie sampler (10 different items) and we left stuffed with a to-go box.

2022-08-26Delicious! The food was very fresh and cooked to order. I believe its a family owned place and it shows in the TLC they provide. My only complaint would be that they dont have any meat and veggie combo plate for those who want a bit of everything. No matter, the food was amazing. Absolutely worth the drive from Gwinnett!

2022-04-08There are tons of reviews from users saying Bahel has the best Ethiopian food theyve ever had, and I 100% agree! Hands down the BEST Ive ever had, and Ive had quite a lot at many different restaurants. As with pretty much every Ethiopian restaurant there are lots of vegan and vegetarian options. Unlike most Ethiopian restaurants I didnt have one or two favorites from the vegetarian combo. Every single thing I ate was equally delicious. Thats something thats uncommon at any restaurant. Unbelievable! Stop reading this and order some Bahel right NOW! 💚💚💚

2022-01-06Small scale Ethiopian spot for a cozy ambiance. We wanted to dine in, but Desta (across street) was carry out only.THE BAD: The honey wine tasted different. I always consume Ethiopian, but this honey wine was sweet -- it just tasted like it had a veggie taste infused in it. It didnt taste as rich as Ive grown accustomed to.THE GOOD: We ordered for two, & it couldve fed 3 or 4. The cabbage, lentils were the best. It came with 3 different cheeses. The Collards were minced finely, but the flavor was sublime. We even asked for extra injera to take home with us & they obliged. Definitely come back with the kids so they can experience!

2022-06-14I have passed Bahel many times going to and from the VA on Clairmont. I have considered stopping many times. Today I did and I am happy I did so. I have never had Ethiopian food before and was anxious to try it. It was, in a word, superb. My server greeted me and brought me some water. I explained to her that I had never had Ethiopian food before. She took the time to explain all the different menu items. I chose the Lamb Tibs (chunks of lamb sauteed with onions and peppers) with awaze sauce ( a spicy tomato and red pepper sauce). It was served on a piece of injera, which is a thin, spongey piece of fermented bread that has a slightly sour aftertaste. She offered me a rice option, but I chose the injera for the authentic way. I also ordered the misir wat (spicy red lentils) as my side. As I waited for my food, I could hear them in the kitchen preparing my food and happily chatting away, in what I assume was probably Oromo. I could also smell my food cooking which always adds to the anticipation. When my food arrived it was hot, fresh and served on a colorful plate. She also brought a ceramic boat containing several rolls of injera. She offered me silverware or explained that she would teach me how eat it in the traditional way. I opted for traditional, so she returned to the kitchen and brought back her own small plate of food. She tore off a piece of the injera, pinched some food, picked it up as she rolled it and ate it. I found it was very easy to do, as the injera stays together, even with sauce on it. My food was spicy, flavorful and it had the right amount of heat. The feeling of the restaurant took me back to some of the street vendors (which is often where you find the best, most authentic food, in my experience) I have eaten at in Mexico and Europe, of course, in a restaurant environment. The Lamb Tibs in awaze were reminiscent of Indian curries like, chetinaad, as far as preparation, but the flavor was totally different. There was a very elegant blend of spices in it that was unlike any other food I have had before. The portion was quite large, so I was able to have some left to take home. After I had eaten, I ordered their coffee. She ground fresh beans, brewed me a small pot of coffee and then served it on a tray with a little sugar bowl, a cup and saucer and a piece of burning incense. I have to say, this wasnt just a meal, it was an experience. While I was eating and having coffee, the stress and noise of the world fell away for a little while. I was priveleged to taste some new foods and learn a small bit about a vibrant culture. I had a fantastic time in this quiet little restaurant. It made me think of the way that food has always been a common experience we share...a very human experience. Im glad I was able to share that today with the staff at Bahel. I really enjoyed it. Thank you very much.

2022-01-12First time having Ethiopian food and man. I am sufficiently pleased and satisfied. Ordered the chicken tibs, dereq tibs, shirro, and the vegetarian combo which were so flavorful. When you walk in it feels like an authentic experience with the music playing, great service, and beautiful decorations. Highly recommend you visit for a great meal. Make sure you ask for mitmita and awaze to go along with it for extra flavor.Bahel is located next to another Ethiopian restaurant and a hookah lounge quietly tucked away in a strip mall.

2022-05-01I’m in LOVE 😍 BAHEL is the winner among the cluster of Ethiopian restaurants in the Clairmont area! Just because it’s an Ethiopian restaurant doesn’t mea me you’re getting the Proper SPICE and everything NICE! Pictured here is the Lentil Sambusa and the Veggie combo. MY son ordered beef tibs which I didn’t try but he said they’re good! The tenderness of the Gomen and the crunch of the green salad coupled with good spongy tangy injera is just EVERYTHING!! You will not need to go to another Ethiopian spot after experiencing Bahel

2022-05-03Super delicious and flavorful. The staff was radiant, warm, and highly attentive. We sat outside and ordered the vegetarian combination and it was bomb dot com: perfectly seasoned with the tiniest kick and enough for two people. The honey wine was served in the traditional glasses and WHEW it was all just perfection. I cant wait to come back here.

2022-03-25This place is amazing. It didnt look that attractive from outside but dont judge a book by its cover right.. Thats totally true in this case. Two of us shared a veggie plate and that was filling for both of us and at an unbeatable price. The injiras were soft, they were cold but I guess thats how they come (in any Ethiopian place). Each curry had exquisite taste! Amazing experience! Will def go again.
