BarBacoa is the best restaurant in Virginia Highlands, maybe even Atlanta. The service is great, the food is ALWAYS fantastic, and the owner is the first to greet you and last to say goodbye. We live in the area and have eaten here dozens of times over the last three years. Dont hesitate just go experience it for yourself.
The food was delicious, like I would say the best tacos I’ve had in a long long time. It also to my surprise came out really fast considering it’s a actually restaurant, beating any fast food places hands down. If you want a quick bite that’ll really fill you up I would 100% recommend this place. 10/10
Some of the dishes are fantastic (e.g., bacon-wrapped dates, roasted cauliflower), while others are huge missed opportunities (e.g., ceviche - needs more acid, paella - it’s way too small and you don’t get any of the crispy rice which tells me it’s probably cooked in a big pot or pressure cooker instead of in a paella pan). I liked our server, he was very attentive and friendly.
This is my go-to tapas place and one of my favorite restaurants in Atlanta. I love their impressive menu and reasonable prices.Pros: The tapas are great across the board. My favorites are the salmon, queso, chicken quesadilla, and shrimp tostadas. Service is always great. The drinks are pretty good and theres a decent variety. The churros are FANTASTIC. Theres ample outdoor seating and the patio is heated in the winter.Cons: Not much! It can be difficult to find parking in Virginia Highlands. I wish they were open later on the weekends. It can get busy, so make a reservation ahead of time. I didnt love the octopus.Bottom line: Compared to Barcelona, the price is similar but the portions are much more impressive. Make a reservation, get a spicy marg, get the salmon and a bunch of other yummy things, finish with churros. You wont be disappointed.
We shared the carne asada, queso and garlic-chile shrimp. The queso is baked but drippy underneath. I love the garlic-chile shrimp too. It had such flavor. This was enough for the two us and we had 2 house margs and 2 other cocktails. The staff was friendly. It was not too hopping that we were able to get seated quickly. We went around 8 pm ish
The tapas really stole the show here! I need to try them all. We got the skillet queso and calamari. Fantastic!! Large portions so when my large tacos came out I was so surprised!! I’m used to teeny tiny street tacos. These were plate sized and packed full. I was in 7th heaven feasting and drinking my margarita. If you really want to take it to another level- order the churros. The best churros I’ve ever had in my life. It comes with Carmel and raspberry compote... can’t wait to come back.10/10
EDIT: Third time here, and unfortunately the experience was worse. Food is has always been okay, but the service is poor. On top of that, staff members came over shortly after we finished our meal (we were going to order more drinks) and informed us that a party of 6 and a party of 10 were waiting to be seated......um, ok. So we got the hint. Very rude.We meet with the same group of friends once a month, and we will be marking Bar-Bacoa as a place NOT to go.Original Review:The place was busy but it didn’t feel packed, which was nice. We had about a 15 minute wait to get a table for two around 8pm on a Friday, so we were pleased with the wait time.Queso dip was delicious, and the chips were just right. The BBQ salmon is a must try! We don’t even like grits, but we got it anyway and will definitely get it again. So good. The tacos we ordered were very delicious as well. My favorite being the Korean taco. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is because we had to ask for every drink refill, and sat with empty cups more than once. Our waiter was very nice and kind, but just had trouble refilling our drinks without us asking...even though he walked past several times. All in all, we will definitely be going back to try more of their menu!! Highly recommend.
Wow. Seriously, wow! This place is absolutely amazing!! We wanted to try everything on their menu! They have plenty of options for vegetarians, meat eaters, and chickentarians (like me). For drinks, we ordered The Dude (white Russian) and The Tropic Thunder -- both were strong and delicious, but The Dude was phenomenal! Hats off to the bartender!! For tacos, we ordered the brisket mac and cheese and the trailer park. For tapas, we ordered the Mexican street corn, chicken tinga empanadas, bacon wrapped dates, and the goat cheese fritters. All were amazing but you MUST order the bacon wrapped dates and the goat cheese fritters!! Service was okay but they were pretty busy so Im not disappointed with the service. But overall, this is a phenomenal place for tapas and drinks. Theres plenty of seating inside and in the heated patio. They have valet parking across the street at the bank or free street parking in the neighborhood. Cant wait to come back and try more things on their menu.
I took my friend to Bar.bacoa for a girls dinner date & we found out it was Taco Tuesday! Meaning 50% off all tacos (except for lobster) which was so clutch!! We literally wanted to try so many and we did haha. I ordered the lamb barbacoa, grilled shrimp and trailer park (fries chicken, house queso, lettuce and pico de gallo). The grilled shrimp was my favorite for sure! I think it’s because I liked the combo of ingredients the most (roasted corn, chipotle aoli, and black bean salsa). I kinda had higher expectations for the lamb barbacoa, it was okay just not as good as I thought it would be. The trailer park is the best seller per the waitress and I can see how, it’s like a classic can’t go wrong with it.We also ordered a side of Mexican corn and Spanish potatoes. The Mexican corn was really good! I would definitely recommend. The potatoes had an interesting vinegar like taste so we weren’t really a fan of them. For drinks we ordered the Steve The Pirate and the House Margarita of the night which was infused with a raspberry flavored beer from a brewery in Asheville. I really liked the margarita I had it! It tasted very citrusy and fresh. My friends drink Steve the Pirate was sooo strong! It was like I had taken shot and I only had a sip. The hazelnut was very apparent in it as well and she really liked her drink.Lastly we had churros for desert and they were really yummy! And because this was Taco Tuesday the whole meal was such a deal! Without the drinks our meal was only $28.00 and $48.00 for everything! The restaurant itself is very beautiful and really spacious. We were seated out on the heated patio which was really comfortable despite the fact Atlanta decided to drop back down to 40 degrees this week! Our waitress was also really sweet too. We really liked her. She provided excellent service and made sure to check on us often.I know I’ll definitely be back because there’s more tacos I want to try :)UPDATE:I love Taco Tuesday!! Came back to try more. This time I got the special of the night which was the Salmon and tried the grilled chicken, along with the grilled shrimp again. Everything was delicious!! The salmon was covered in a honey chipotle glaze, with chopped red onions and pineapple pieces! It was delicious!!
One of my favorites! I could eat something different every time and have a superb meal! My most favorite is the Carne Asada followed C closely by the Scallops and Mexican Street Corn! Excellent selection of cocktails and wine, too! Tonight I tried a new dessert: the flourless chocolate cake! Yum!
Bar-Bacoa is awesome! I try to eat there every week. Definitely a neighborhood place but everyone is welcome! I know the staff by name and they know me. Now to the food and drink! Tacos are the go-to but everything is great! My go to is Trailer Park Tacos with mexican corn added! I also start with an awesome wedge salad so I get more vegetables. The soprano is my favorite margarita. One try and you will be hooked!!!
Always love coming to this restaurant. Jake our server was amazing. The food never disappointed and was even better than before. I took some friends there for the first time and they loved everything. Location, atmosphere, service and of course the food. We stayed for several hours and never felt like we were being rushed out. We may or may not have closed the place down. Thanks to Jake for another amazing experience!
I’m a fan of this spot! First of all, we couldn’t get a group reservation anywhere. We reserved two smaller tables and they proactively called me & offered to combine them - very kind. Service was fantastic, food was delish, menu has something for everyone. We did order too much food - oops. The fried lobster tail is 💯. Can’t recall the name (As You Like It, maybe?) but the strawberry vodka cocktail was also delish. We’d all definitely go back! Note: valet parking is behind the building!
Everything was so quick for a Saturday night. We didn’t have to wait for a table, to get waters, to be greeted by our server, and the food came out so quickly! Really enjoyed all of the dishes we got, especially the street corn and the thick cut chips that came with the guac.
Literally the most authentic taco I’ve had since I’ve moved here. I ordered the lamb and braised beef— they were so savory. Plus they had corn shells which made it even more authentic. Loved the atmosphere....It reminded me of a restaurant in New York which is a major plus! In addition, the service was superb! I’ll definitely be back. Next time I’ll be dining in.
For the WIN, try the goat cheese fritters, bacon wrapped dates, mexican street corn, fried lobster tail, baja taco, and ANYTHING else on the menu b/c EVERYTHING I tried was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS...including drinks! Outstanding customer service so TIP WELL. Oh and make reservations because it gets packed in this place!
Ive picked up and delivered here a bunch of times while doing UberEATS, absolutely loved the staff here and the choice of music, Saint Motel is a popular one lol, and the atmosphere is so cozy and comforting, and the food menu and beverages were well chosen, came for my Moms Birthday and wasnt disappointed. ;)
One of the truly great tapas restaurants in Atlanta! The quality and colors of how the tapas are made is astonishing. There was an abundance of choices and didnt matter what we ordered as it was divine. To top it off - they make a fantastic Old Fashioned. Unconventional for tapas but they sure can make it!
Super dope spot with great service! My lady and I went for the first time when it was the old Taco Cowboy. Once the ownership changed, we hoped to have the same great experience as before, but I will say its even better than before! Weve even invited a few couples to join us for dinner from time to time and they feel the same way we do, its official like a Military whistle!Im only here writing a review because we just made a reservation again for tonight. Cant wait to eat and drink the goodness.
We have visited this restaurant several times now and they never disappoint. Food is delicious and the service is attentive. Our favorites so far are the ceviche, empanadas, carne asada, street corn and the pozole verde which tastes very authentic and my favorite drink is the dude. You wouldn’t expect such a delicious food in this little place but it’s definitely a must try!! Highly recommended
I actually got sick after leaving here. While I would be able to over look that if the food was incredible, it was not. Mostly just creative twists on normal foods that didnt necessarily make them better. In particular, I was disappointed with the ceviche - the peppers and other bits that were in it were too large to actually eat comfortably, and the chips they served with it were way too large. Just ended up dropping a lot of the food on to my plate. The indoor dining room painfully carries sound from other diners as well.
My friends threw me a going away party at Bar-Bacoa and we had the best time (of course primarily for my wonderful company), but this place is fantastic! We had at least half of the appetizers and nothing fell short of amazing! The margaritas were off the chain, the bloody Marys fantastic, and the management and staff friendly and accommodating! I love this place! You can tell a lot of pride and hard work go into the running of this place!
My new favorite go to for takeout. The food is consistently delicious. Obsessed with the poblano and corn empanadas, seriously yummy! My food arrives hot every time I order. I cannot wait to support this restaurant in person in post Covid times. Until then I will order in and support this gem.
Great area, very friendly staff, even better food. I love the brisket Mac and cheese tacos and always get at least one and usually switch up the the other 2 I order to something new. The empanadas are great too! Highly recommend this place, you won’t regret it. Eat local!
Best food Ive had at a restaurant in a long time! Plates that cost 4x as much at other places havent impressed me as much as some of what Ive had here. 10/10, couldnt have enjoyed the food more. Especially the salmon and grits. Incredible. Ive only ever ordered in, so I cant speak to anything else. But Im always craving it now!
Great Food - We got a few tapas and the Baja fish tacos and I was quite pleased with the flavors amd the quality of the ingredients. I did not realize until the meal that I had absolutely No need to add any condiments including hot sauce. I got a glass of the Chilean cab which went well with the rich tapas. My wife and friends ordered the jalapeno margaritas which I thought were fantastic.Ambience - Chill but a chic vibe with pleasant lighting that wasnt overly dim was appealing and added to the feel.Recomendation - Tinga chicken empanadas, Serrano Ham mac and cheese and goat cheese fritters were what we ordered and would absolutely recommend it. If you like wine, the Chilean cab is good value fpr money amd pairs well.
I love this place! I leave here with a warm happiness every time! I’m here now and already looking forward to next week. The staff is so impressive. I don’t know how Julian does it. The food is amazing every time. Thank you to whoever is making magic in the kitchen 👍.
The daughter wanted tacos Al fresco. Bar-Bacoa was the answer. The food was great, the hospitality matched the food, and the outside dining was very nice. Just one problem ... There is a short hallway leading to the street where the smokers duck in to take their nasty smelling drug fix, and it wafts right out to the dining area. That is both, exceedingly rude, and its unhealthy all across the board.
Come Here!! Listen when it comes to finding that new spot, here it is. The food is F$%*ing incredible! I’m not joking. It was a fun night with the best food i have had in a while and the drinks were great! The servers are the nicest and best in the biz. I’m the first review and the place was packed! This is the place your going to tell your friends to try!
This place is a joke...to start out, even sitting at a not so crowded bar it took the bartender at least 5-8 minutes to come and ask what I wanted to drink. When I gave him my Malbec wine order(Spanish pronunciation)...from a minimal selection if I may add, he looked at me clueless and said “I have no idea what you said, sounded like some sort of jibberish”. How does a BARTENDER not know what wine is on their menu?? Also ordered the octopus which came with a white bean medley. The plate was hot, the octopus was hot, the sauce was hot, but the beans were cold. It tasted as bad as it sounds, and really ruined the dish! I asked the bartender if the beans were supposed to be cold and again he was clueless and said “I’m sorry your meal was not satisfying”...I promptly asked for my bill and left as fast as I could. Overall this was a two thumbs down experience for me 😒
I worked at Noche in this same location for 13 years and now that Scott and James own it, its back to the best place ever!! Julian is such a great, hilarious, down to earth server!! We had a blast and will continue to support these guys forever!! Thanks for the hospitality and consistency. You guys are killing it. We love Bar Bacoa!!!

2022-03-17I was very surprised, this was so very good and I look forward to going again! I had the Chile bbq salmon….so delicious! My friends has a variety of the tacos, and they were all very good. I also had the apple crisp which was pretty good (not as good as the main menu food) but still a nice ending to my meal. The portions are a little small, but that’s it, everything else was perfection. Highly recommend. Make sure to make a reservation

2022-05-07First of all thanks again to Cat our server for the awesome dining experience that we had. She was so pleasant and went above and beyond to make sure our first visit was memorable. What else can I say, this place is amazing!! Food is delicious, huge variety, great portions and drinks are fantastic. $3.50 for a 16oz Tecate beer cant beat that. We literally ordered the whole menu...lol... Ah! And dont forget to try the Oblivion Truffle tart.... cant wait to go back!

2022-04-20A group of girls and I traveled down to Atlanta for a fun overnight trip, and the first place we decided to go was Bar-Bacoa. Even though we walked in around the time they opened, the service was quick, and it wasn’t crowded. I ordered the Serrano ham mac & cheese listed under the tapas, and it was delicious. I didn’t have any tacos, but, according to the rest of the group, they were also delicious. I would definitely go back again.

2021-09-01Bar-Bacoa serves solid pan-Latin cuisine, with offerings of tacos to paella, and a little bit of everything in between. There is a wide array of taco options. I went with a Buffalo Cauliflower taco, an Impossible taco and a Trailer Park taco. All were good.My husband ordered the chicken tortilla soup and nachos. He was happy with his as well. It’s a great little neighborhood spot for a casual meal. Bonus: they have shaded outdoor seating out back. I’ll definitely return to explore more of the menu.

2021-11-12Tapas abounds for all tastes. In the vein of “North American Gourmet” tapas, not “European Continental traditional” but creative while still very tasty. Cocktails and Margaritas are their specialty but wine selections are superior if limited. Beer - they have a good bottled collection but since they are surrounded by Tap houses they don’t try to compete. Their food will more than make up if you are picky about beer. Hip. Attentive. Looks like it will always be a good evening if you stop by. Parking hint - if you can find a spot in the lot behind the small strip shopping center it’s the place to go. Access from North Highland Ave. If not - no idea but it will be a pleasant walk in the neighborhood on the spring and fall. Oh! Their Taco list. 😳

2020-12-14Had an absolutely delightful time here tonight. It is an absolutely fabulous restaurant with some of the best staff and of course, food around the town. From making the reservation, to arriving and being seated, to the service and the food, our server, Samantha made us feel totally at home and very welcome. It is hard to come across such friendly and pleasant servers. It added to the deliciousness of the already delicious food.We were really impressed with their wide tapas range and of course their tacos options. They have a nice patio and a galley for outdoor seating. There is adequate free parking around as well.Highly highly recommended.

2022-03-13It was yummy! Had some Barbacoa nachos, mexican street corn, an avocado taco, calamari and a spicy good, bad & ugly margarita. Everything was delicious! Server was very friendly. There was 5 of us and we split the check. It was $40 a piece with tip.

2022-06-20Great food and staff. Tapas with great portion sizes. Good drinks too. My faves are the roasted cauliflower covered in cheese and the skillet queso!
