Really enjoyed my visit. Came for a Billy Holiday Tribute with a business partner. The music was delightful/phenomenal band that evening. Wait staff was a little slow and the venue wasnt packed. While the service was slow, the staff was polite and professional. Great way to unwind during the week!
Great little hidden gem. This place has been around for decades. First time here celebrating a birthday and had the best time. The live music performance was phenomenal. The crowd was dancing and singing along through 3 sets....Awesome. The food was not that good, I ordered the salmon and it was extremely overcooked, my cocktail was not the best, and it was a busy Friday night so service was a bit slow. Even with all that, I will definitely go back time and time again just for the ambience and entertainment.
I absolutely love Cafe 290! The food, service, music and atmosphere consistently exceeds my expectations. Yes there is a cover charge, BUT finding music this authentic warrants the fee. I took my dad there for his birthday, it was packed and tables were full. The owner walked right over and made sure we had a table! Definitely recommend.
We met here for girls night and really enjoyed ourselves. Its dimly lit inside with candles and every table has good full view of the band. The food was great, drinks were good and strong, service was attentive and the band was everything. They rocked the place along with the R&B singer who came out later. This place closes at 1am on Friday. We got there at 8pm and didnt leave until close to 1:00am. We were having that great of a time. Well definitely be returning to 290.
Such a fun place and authentic atmosphere. Jazz is phenomenal and the performers know how to engage the crowd- the whole place was laughing and having an amazing time. The food is also really tasty with great prices - get the ribeye with mashed potatoes! You won’t be disappointed
GREAT TIME! First time visiting location, but it was excellent. Staff was absolutely friendly, bartender (James?) was an excellent conversationalist eventhough bar was full and the Food was really good. But the live BAND and young lady singing was better than the mozzarella sticks 😁. Parking lot was something to be desired, but Ill be back again. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👏🏾
Amazing atmosphere very friendly people the staff was amazing our server was Shay....absolutely amazing. Reggie Hines was performing. If you have not seen the Reggie Hines show please stop by, reserve a table, eat dinner, and just sit back and relax you will have an amazing time. We have not been to this location in almost 20 years Im so thankful that we decided to stop by. Your money definitely will not be wasted.
Brass cats play twice a month on Thursday and they are worth seeing. Havent been here in a long time but my last visit was very enjoyable. The keyboard player Scott Ritchie is a friend of ours. We went to see him and was pleasantly surprised at how great the whole band was!
A group of us was visiting Atlanta from out of town. It was six of us, two couples each and the server asked us how we separated and we told him that way our checks would be separated. The music was good however I ordered the Chicken Parmesan and the chicken was burnt on the bottom. I sent the plate back to the kitchen and the server asked me if I wanted something else and I told him no. My uncle and boyfriend order the salmon and it was very dry and my aunt order the jerk chicken and that was cooked very well which she enjoyed. At the end of the night the server brought us one ticket and hand wrote the total that each couple had to pay on the back of the ticket stating that he couldnt separate them. As we were adding up our items on our cell phones and they were not totaling up right the server only then told us that he added 20% gratuity to our bill which was not listed on the ticket.Furthermore, the Chicken Parmesan that I sent back to the kitchen that was burnt was on the bill and then he told us that the kitchen dont take back plates so we had to pay for it. I was so upset I only took two bites out of the plate and that was never communicated to us through out the night (we were there for about 2 and half hours). That was unacceptable. Then the server said that he didnt charge me for at $7 class of wine (the Chicken Parmesan was $19). We felt were being taken advantage of because we were from out of town. The service that we received from our server was very disappointing and I would not recommend this place if you are planning on eating dinner. I would advise you to eat and drink before you come that way you can just sit back and enjoy the music.
Great live music and band. The overall ambiance is pretty good but it could definitely use some updating and cleaning. There were few menus available and many of the items on the menu had been blacked out. I only ordered appetizers but others in the group ordered meals and all seemed okay. Everything came out correct, fast and nice and hot. Our server was great. The cover charge is a little exorbitant for such an establishment ($15), should have been none or $5. We had a good time but I do not think I would return.
This is Atlanta best jazz bar. I love this place. Every act that they bring in, is awesome. The only bad thing is the service. The waitresses are usually nice, but there is never enough of them. They seem to be eternally short staffed. The wait to be served can get ridiculous.
Grown & sexy atmosphere, friendly staff, good food & and great music! My only complaint is that they ran out of a lot of food way too early. They shouldve been better prepared for the large crowd, especially since it was Super Bowl weekend. Other than that, this place is great!
The live music was excellent! Had a party for mom here. However, the venue was small and dark and the host was unprofessional and very rude . We had to clean off our own tables and order from bar because of the slow staff. Place needs renovation. The venue not worth $15. The only thing that kept us there was the music.
The venue that was advertised was not there. I called weeks ahead for reservations for 12 people. They told me would get an area with a sofa etc. We were jammed in a corner in the very back and 5 of us had to stand. The place was run down and dirty. The carpet was awful and so were the restrooms. The music wss good, I was embarrassed that I took our group there.
Café 290 is a smaller venue that offers dining tables near the stage, cocktail tables closer to the door, and bar seating that encircling approximately 50% of the full-service bar.Due to recommendations from the reviews I read we arrived shortly after 8:00 PM for the 9:00 PM starting time. Having already eaten dinner we decided to grab a cocktail table near the middle of venue, which turned out to be an excellent selection. As showtime approached the joint began to quickly fill up and it ended up being standing room only.Service was OK, although it did seem that our waitress wasnt very attentive and the only way that we were able to get drinks was to stop her as she walked by us. Perhaps it was just me, but she seemed to be ignoring us compared to the service she was providing to the remainder of her tables.
Food staff and restaurant need improving. This place is expensive so excellent service should come with its hefty prices. Loved the jazz. Food, drinks and staff need improving. We waited over 56 minutes for our food. Drinks even just water with lemon was an extensive wait.
Went for jazz music - the after hours quintet was excellent. Made a mistake and ordered food... My steak was half fat slab and half meat and tendons good thing there was veggies and potatoes. Asked for drinks menu - the list has no pricing on it... I suppose Ill have a surprise on the way out
Not a big jazz person but went for a friends birthday and had a good time. The music was good, but being sited in the front is the worst also as other reviews have pointed out service is slow, and the mixed drinks were not that great. Save so money and have a glass of wine.
This was an AMAZING night of incredible music and great food! A first time visitor but I WILL return and tell everyone I know. Mr Hines & Company was nothing short of a musical delight. Guest Violinist Brandi Alford took my breath away. Awesome. Awesome. And our server Kristen was like a BFF we hadnt met yet.
Ok I absolutely adored this little joint, I truly did!!! My daughter and I visited on Valentines Night and we had a blast!!! The live jazz was simply awesome and the food and beverages were very tasty!!! A few things to mention that were not so great however!!! The place is rather small so if you have claustrophobia this will not work for you!!! The space is very tight and yes you will hear your neighbors conversation and vice versa!!! The face that as soon as you walk in the front door your view is the kitchen dish washing area, which is kinda disgusting to be honest.....nah I care not to see your dirty dishes!!! Next to the entrance is the smokers lounge and since I hate cigarette smoke this was the biggest turn off for me!!! And lastly, the restrooms could use a little updating!!! I would also love to see places like this cover the food when transporting dishes from the kitchen to the tables.... makes it more sanitary. But again, loved the live jazz.....I would also invest in better speakers owners! I shall return tho lol.
My wife and I were in town from Nashville celebrating our 23rd wedding anniversary and we ended the night visiting Cafe 290. Wow, what a treat. Reci Reign was there with an awesome band. We greatly enjoyed ourselves. The atmosphere was great and the live music cannot be touched. We will be back and will bring friends. Please bring Reci back. Great combination. Everyone enjoyed them.
$12 at the door, $5 would be the most appropriate price. The place is a nice size club nothing extravagant neighborhood folks. I’m a musician by trade so that’s why I was there to network with the musicians do a number or two that didn’t happen because there wasn’t any list to sign, it’s who you know. The band had its favorites they could sing the music which was R&B old school soul FM radio stuff. It was loud for me I moved back that help a little. This place boost about all the major celebrities graced that door it would be hard to tell that it is by the way the performers were clothed. The people get it they’re looking great but the performers are tone deaf there wearing t-shirts and other crumpled s———wear they found on the couch after they loaded the equipment. Ruth Brown once said “the entertainers suppose to look better than the audience” her advise missed the ALT musicians. Two times I’ve been to the cafe 290 since coming from Frisco, I know from the littlest black lounge in the city which ain’t many the players at least wear ties button up shirt if not suits we’d feel cheated. The pictures on the walls and flyers show that it’s well established. all those people in those pictures looked spectacular and spending money too. I admit I’ve been only been to the club twice my impression this is normal on sundays, to me it’s a deal breaker I’ll try another night other than Sunday when those fly looking entertainers throw down like the folks that were celebrating. Old blues musicians sometimes only had one suit but it had 2 pair of pants. a reversible vest and coat. So one side for the gig and the other side for church, Sunday’s wear your meeting suit local ATL musicians.
Mostly because my cousin Wes was playing there :) but the door guy was especially gracious while I grabbed a quick breath of air and smoked a cigarette letting me go out and back in without trouble, and the staff was so friendly like family and I loved the intimate atmosphere. The bathrooms could use a little sprucing or work, but other than that it was awesome.
Its a bar.. I can expect more.. but the simple older decor works.. its a shadow in perspective to the music. This time I sat at the bar. The male Bartender was great. I asked for my Glenlivet in a old fashion.. no problem ( I hate girly glasses-save that for those who drink mixed drinks). The entertainment has been great each time. I dont eat there.
If youre in or around the Atlanta area, and looking for live Jazz, Cafe 290 is a long standing, solid source. Monday nights a few times a month, theres Joe Grandsdens Big Band made up of some of Atlantas finest artists. The night I went, a solid band with a cabaret singer performed- enjoyed! Call ahead or check online to make sure its a show of interest to you. If youre a Jazz Lover, a musician or simply in the neighborhood, worth checking out.
This place has been in business for 25 yrs and you wouldnt know it. It put you in the mind of a start up place that just open. New to the area the information on their website has not been updated. My husband and I arrived and we were celebrating a birthday. We were enjoying the band feeling the vibe, and around 11:00 pm I started smelling cigarette smoke. We walked up front and ask the guy who was at the door, whats going on? He stated after 11:00 they can smoke on the other side of the room. Very upset because walking in your establishment clearly on oxygen, one would think I would have been informed. Had to leave and they dont need any star!!!!! But you cant post unless you give them one. It over priced to be a hole in the wall. Will never go back.
One star ONLY and that star belongs to the band. Took my mother here for her birthday & it was a HUGE mistake! The food was horrible! The wings were teeny tiny and old& outdated, not fresh at all. They were so old, I was afraid I would become sick from eating them, so I didnt. My mom sent two plates of food back and left there without eating anything. Our waitress was rude and unattentive. She never refilled our drinks. I couldnt even order my mom a 2nd drink bc our waitress disappeared. After eating, our plates sat on the table for 2whole hours before she cleared our table. Our experience here was so terrible that it ruined my mothers bday. We will NEVER go back there again. They charge a $15 cover charge and the food is GARBAGE with hefty prices. We had a party of 12 & noone had anything good to say about their food. If you want to eat good and enjoy good service without breaking the bank--- this is the wrong place to come. Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. & besides that------the place is a DUMP! It needs to be renovated very badly. Just take a look at the restrooms and the ceilings. With all the money they charge, the least they could do is make the place presentable, nice, and comfortable. They never have to worry about my family again!! If I could give Cafe 290 zero stars, I would.
Visit date 09/08/18The music was AWESOME!!!Terrible service from hostess to server. Was in town from Charlotte, never been to this resturant/ jazz club, therefore wasnt aware of a cover charge to enter for dinner...We made reservations showed up was told we needed to pay $15 each to enter into dinning area...we questioned the charge simply because it didnt make sense to us...Lady at the hostess stand, was very rude and matter fact when we asked questions.Noooo customer service skills. We werent upset over paying, just wanted to understand how it worked when dining. She had no personality, just rude. Our server was the same, just rude...had it not been for such an Awesome band,we wouldve walked out...The server scratched out our total on the check and added a %18 gratuity for 2 people...we had 3 drinks,1 dinner plate, appetizer...which again we would have given her a nice tip...even with her bad service...there was no need to write a tip expectation on the check. We will NEVER recommend or return.
Went on a Sunday night and the music was amazing. We had a party of 4 and only one person really enjoyed their food and it was me. My ribeye steak was amazing so were the veggies on the side. The jerk chicken breast was too salty. The blackened salmon lacked seasoning and flavor. The shrimp Alfredo pasta was a bland as well..service is slow. The jerk wing and hot wings were great appetizers and drinks were good as well. We arrived at 830PM for the 830PM show and were able to sit wherever we wanted. The Show didnt start until 9 which was cool with us. Arriving early allowed for great parking in front. The staff was friendly which is always nice. Cover can be paid with a cc if needed amd cost pee show is always noted on their website with the type of show which is a plus. We will definitely return for the music and atmosphere not the food LOL
Only because I couldnt give a zero. Friday. July 21,2017. Horrible service. The manager is confused. She stuck 9 guests by the dirty bathrooms to sit. Then we waited 20 mins and no one approached us so I asked for the manager. Then she said she cannot give us free drinks because we waited so long. Guess what we never asked you honey. Then the Margaritas were salty as hell. This mess only happened because the birthday girl wanted to try it again. She had fun one time. I remember I was there that Friday night. The band on Friday was great. But the service sucks!!!! They take your $15 at the door then say To hell with you Thats what we get. A waste of gas, time and energy. Oh. Its hot as hell. The fans dont work
While Im a broke college kid so I cant really afford the food here, the music is just fantastic, and really such a great value. Joe Grandsen and His Big Band are always a hit. This is a favorite spot for me and my girlfriend. If youre ever in Altanta and looking for some Jazz, this is the place to go.
15 dollar cover charge....band was great....servjce was horrible. Waitress forget she had taken our order....no utensils....didnt replenish water or drinks.Hostess was on her cell phone the entire time. I ordered chicken parm, which was good....no bread, though....had to demand the check.....our dining experience was the worst. Saxophonist Reggie Hines was outstanding, though..
Went to Cafe 290 for a birthday dinner party, the live jazz music was PHENOMENAL, HOWEVER the waitress was ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!!! She constantly forgot things that were requested, she removed plates from the table that were not finished, then she tagged on a 18% gratuity for the shabby service that she provided! She was AWFUL!!! The food was decent but not for the price in my opinion. I’m a stickler for customer service and this waitress was the WORST!!!
Jazz band was great. Service on the other hand was horrible. I was seated for 30mins an was never asked by a waiter if I needed anything. I had to stop a waiter to get a meau. Then she never came back for my order. So an hour of being there I still havent gotten any service from the waiter. The service is really really bad..
Had an awesome time. Food was excellent and band. Place is very small. This was my second time going very slim chance if I go again. However, our waitress had an awful attitude . Her name is Jahari. The space is very tight and every time she came by she kept bumping into me and other guess. She was also very rude when it came time for us to check out. My husband and I came with another couple and we wanted separate tabs. She put it all together on one receipt and when we asked for it to be done separate she said their machines can’t do separate orders which was an lie and then was rude to us by in saltine our math skills. Saying it’s not hard just add up what you ordered. She has poor communication skills and I hope she sees this. Jahari if you don’t like your job get another one. I will be letting your manager/boss know about your behavior. I was going to tip but after I was insalted I told my husband to don’t tip.
I tried calling before my wife and I drove 40mins to get there. When we got there someone met us at the door to tell us that the Jazz Band had cancelled. We decided to stay anyway because it was our FIRST time coming. Asked for a food menu and was told there is no food. GTFOH, so what no band no food. WOW.
Our waitress was very rude and unprofessional when we ask her could she separate the bill she said the machine is not set to do thar and plus you can figure out the total. I said wow and ok. Then she charge the wrong total on my card this was my husband and I first time it might be our last. The table are small. The waitress name is Jahan server number one. We enjoyed the jazz music.
We went here for new years eve 2016 and just were not wowed.Da Bad... roaches, cramp quarters, so so food with exception of the snapper that was good, but they served us on paper plates, and no place to dance with my wife. (0 stars)Da Good.... entertainment was good with a bit of raucous comedy from Bo peep and R&B classics from Kipper Jones. (4 stars)
As i sit here pissed i did not read the reviews before i decided to skip Velvet note to come here, im more annoyed with myself than anything! there are too many reviews posted on how horrible the food is! i ordered the salmon and it is the cheapest salmon you can buy! even the waitress explained how she has heard many times about the salmon not good and dry. so cafe 290 knows their food is a problem but they continue to Not it! i just wish i knew this before , i could have ate elsewhereand only came to cafe 290 for drinks and the jazz! this place is taking every penny for themselves and not putting any money into fixing this so called classy place up.( the bathroom door locked is halfway off, just take it off!! i gave 2stars for the jazz band, if it wasnt for them i would have given a 1 ( since zero is not an option) since im VERY big on food!i say eat before you go and enjoy jazz band!
Great jazz club, Kipper Jones is an awesome entertainer and William Green is unbelievable on the keyboards. The entire band was great, this is how it use to be in the 60s Harlem, Chicago, Detroit.Real entertainment with artist that can play and sing. This type of music is the motivation for my soul.
Cafe 290 is an Atlanta/Sandy Springs staple gor Jazz, and Blues. It is a quaint place with a bar and menu that will please any palette. I have bisited on numerous occasions and been pleased with the music, food, and service. If you ever get the chance you should check it out. Catch some of the local talent and enjoy the down home ambience. The reason I gave it 3 stars is because the place is LONG overdue for some renovations....lol!
Music was good but my girl got her purse stolen and the staff didnt not care at all about helping to find it. i know a staff memeber stole it. i will never go there again and will tell everyone that cafe 290 suck and they steal .And i file a police report. wish i could give no stars.
A glass of sprite was $9. A glass of weak nasty sangria was $15. To top it off you pay $12 to get in. I just spent $60 on what???!!!!!! I was also rold thete was open mic which was the main reason to go out only to find out that they were doing features only which was not advertised on the website.
Tonights performance by LTanya Sugarlips Turner at Cafe 290 deserved 6 + stars. She was amazing. The food and drinks are always on point at 290 but TuKut ruined the whole experience for me and as a result of her interrupting Sugarlips performance twice and her obnoxious, disrespectful and unprofessional outbursts, It will be a long time before I support another show that she promotes; if ever. Yes. She was that bad.

2021-04-10Finding this place was the best thing that happened to me during my trip to Atlanta. The location is great, easy to find (w/ private parking). Getting a reservation was super fast and simple. The interior suits the music and restaurant. Food was very good, great customer service as well. Went to listen to William Green’s trio and boy do they sound great, he seems very experienced at entertaining the audience. Not to mention, as a underaged youngster just trying to see some live music at a bar/restaurant without the worry of age restrictions (21+), this place welcomed me right in. First time and I’ll definitely come back to Cafe 290 in the future.

2021-06-16Cafe 290 was an iconic jazz club in Atlanta (Roswell actually) I had been going to Cafe 290 since 1997 when I first move here. The best local talent in the city of Atlanta played there. You would even see some celebrities there on occasion. I will say if the owner had invested into renovating the club it would still be open. But Cafe 290 stayed popular even still. In closing want to say that there will never be a another Cafe 290, and it will never be forgotten.

2020-08-03Awesome LIVE music! William Green and his Boys did that! Great food and drinks! Chris took great care of us! Social distancing but still a great time with the other patrons. Cant wait to go back.
