This is not regarding the recent boarding, as there was no visible despair that we saw from any of our three dogs.I have waited for over a week now to see how Darren would further handle the situation that we so unfortunately incurred with Prescott while in their care. While it was the groomer, that is still a person whom you employ and are yet responsible for. It is disconcerting to have been witness not only to his lack of empathy while in the moment at his facility, but further how he seemed to have ignored the situation. Perhaps he reprimanded the groomer or perhaps he didn’t, behind the scenes, none of that is concern to me.As someone who is business oriented, I have yet to understand how he didn’t reach out further, how he didn’t offer a credit to the grooming bill, or how he didn’t over some other compensation for future stay.Between our three dogs, it is fair to say that we spent a good deal of money boarding them at this facility for 7-days. To come home and find that they elected to shave my beautiful, long haired Pekingese is inexplicable. I, personally, do not think that they have any right without having something in writing to do as they did. I emphatically, in tears, stated in his facility, I, in no way, gave permission for this to occur. I never once received a phone call from the groomer or anyone else at the facility to authorize this, nor would I. To say that they have a master groomer who was unable to get through some matts, is laughable. His normal groomer has zero problems with him; how do you think he still had long hair?I do not wish to receive their pity or even their money. I simply wanted to let him know that if he prided himself as an honest, caring business owner and a dog lover, he has not proved that he is either of these through this situation.~~Displeased customer!PS - Youll note in his shaved picture, that you can see his skin, it is so close and hes only wear a cute bandana, which I put on him, to try and cover up the unevenness.
My Shih Tzu Ivy has been coming here for boarding and grooming since she was a baby and she is seven now. She runs to the building when she gets here because she loves Daren and team so much. She is always happy when she stays here in her doggy vacation and looks great after being groomed. I highly recommend Five Star Dog Resort!
Cant say enough about our experience with Five Star. We sent our dog for both on and off leash in-board training and the results have been awesome.The biggest thing Darrin was able to do was build our dogs confidence. She was skittish around men, which made it very difficult for me to successfully train at home.Due to COVID, I havent been able to go inside the facility. However, the staff is always very welcoming and courteous both in-person and on the phone. My dog LOVES being there.
Wow what a wonderful experience. Our English lab puppy ( 1 yr) has done on and off leash training with Darrin. He is an amazing dog trainer. My dog Wilson just loved the time he spent there and the training is going great . Darrin is incredibly patient and is extremely talented. His prices are very fair and the training we all received was amazing. Our Wilson is well on his way to becoming the wonderful well behaved dog we wanted. I would highly recommend this facility. They really care about these pets and they are in this business for the right reasons. Everyone who works there is so friendly and they all knew my dog ! The groomer was terrific too . When I took my dog back for the second 2 week session he was so happy to see Darrin. Five Star is not close to where I live and it is COMPLETELY worth the 45 minute drive. If you need training or boarding for your pet this is definitely the place.
I can always count on the caring professionals at Five-Star Dog Resort. I have been bringing my 10-year-old special needs German Shepherd here since she was a puppy. There was an instance when she needed some medication while boarding there. A staff member picked up the medication that I had our vet call in to the pharmacy. We were very grateful and had peace of mind while we were out of state taking care of family business.
Our dog Rosie stayed with them while we were visiting friends in the area. We had some unexpected travel delays and we arrived much later than planned. We talked with Pamela and she was incredibly friendly, understanding and flexible. After a stressful day it was really refreshing to have such a friendly and professional person working with and welcoming us. Highly recommend this company.
We have boarded our dogs at Five Star Dog Resort several times over the last 6 years. My dogs are always well cared for while staying with them. I love that they have both a quiet place for my geriatric lab and an indoor/outdoor run and playtime for my younger active dog.They truly care about the health and well-being of my dogs. They are always diligent in accurately dispensing my dogs medications, too. I have both dogs bathed before pickup and they are always fluffy and clean. I highly recommend Five Star Dog Resort.
Was very hesitant boarding our dog as a puppy, but Daren did a good job of giving us the warm and fuzzy so we used them. Daisy was so happy when we got back and seemed to have had a wonderful experience. Bringing her back for on leash training in a few weeks. Highly recommend this place!
Five Star Dog Resort is a good kennel but better yet has a great training program. We had to bring our dog, a miniature schnauzer, there for boarding and we also decided to leave him in the hands of the staff and Daren for training. Two weeks later, we have a entirely different dog! In a positive way. Before, our dog was hyper and basically out of control. After, while still hyper, were now in control.Daren was nice and worked with us and our dog so that we were all in sync. He more or less saved our dog and made us feel much better as owners. I would highly recommend Five Star Dog Resort for the training and for the boarding.
I have known Daren and the team at Five Star for over eight years. Daren has trained my black lab and my sons two Australian Shepherds and we have had fantastic experiences. Five Star boards all three dogs and they are excited to be there every time. I have also gotten to know Daren personally and find him to be a man of integrity and caring. I have trusted Daren with my dog for over eight years and have referred many friends, as well. I would encourage anyone else to also put their trust in Daren and Five Star Dog Resort.
Our family adopted a shepherd mix from the humane society. After a really bad experience at the vet, we were encouraged to get her some training. The vet said she will not adapt without it. Our neighbor recommended Daren. That was ten years ago, she is the best trained family dog weve ever had. We recently boarded her with Five Star and she came back to us better than ever. She even learned a couple new commands! We appreciate all that Daren did for our dog and would recommend him to anyone without hesitation.
We are more than pleased with the off leash training our Aussie Doodle has received from Daren at Five Star. She is so well behaved that I receive compliments when taking her to my kids sporting events. I can also see a dramatic difference in her ability to walk around the block as compared to a neighbors dog at the same age - it is like night and day. We chose Daren to train our dog because he emphasized working with the dog and with our family. He was completely understanding that each dog is different and learns on a different time table. He had all four of our family members practice all the commands for our dog outside of his facility multiple times until we were comfortable with how to use the leash with commands and walking with the dog. He truly understands that it is not just the dog you are training but also how the dog fits into your family and how you as a unit will consistently apply the training. When we brought our dog back to the facility for off leash training she was very excited to see the staff and you could tell they had a bond with our dog. Daren means it when he says call him anytime with any questions or concerns you may have with your dogs training. He will be happy to talk you thru anything. It is like having a consult on speed dial!
We brought our puppy in for the In Board On Leash training and are delighted with the results! Our dog is confident , extremely happy, and is a pleasure to walk. We highly recommend Daren and Five Star Dog Resort!
Im very impressed with the service, atmosphere and work done at Five Star. I enrolled my small Dachshund mix in training. He is very stubborn and strong willed. He completed the leash training which has made our walks less a struggle. The leash training also helps with his overall obedience. My dog loves when we go near the business This has given me confidence in the service given to the animals because if the treatment was not on par, he wouldnt want to go back.
As a former employee (for nearly a year) and current customer of Five Star. I must wholeheartedly disagree with the negative review posted by another previous employee who clearly doesnt know what shes talking about. I have extensive experience with dogs professionally and personally. Daren is a caring, committed dog lover and dog services business owner. His entire set up is designed for the safety, comfort and health of his clients. He instills in his employees that same level of commitment. As a trainer, Daren shows the same commitment and care. I witnessed Darens careful consideration of each guests needs and no matter what, each dogs safety and well being is job #1. I keep my dogs there whenever I travel and I am confident of their care while away.
We really couldn’t manage without 5 Star - our dogs second home! Daren and the folks there treat him as their own. Jake can be a bit high maintenance but Daren has worked with us to train him and improve behaviors. Great customer service every time I call or go in. Definitely 5 Stars.
Our family loves Five Star Dog Resort!!! We brought Luna (our very active 5 month old new four legged family member) to Darren at Five Star for on leash and off leash training. An amazing difference in the enjoyment of our new family member. Behaves great around family, friends and children on and off leash + Luna is excited every time we arrive to check her for overnight boarding with play time. Darren threw in an extra bonus and taught Luna how to be a flying frisbee dog! Thank you Five Star Dog Resort!
Two years ago, our family brought a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy into our family. An amazing animal, but stubborn and a breed the requires a good, consistent & positive training. We researched local dog training professionals & facilities, we heard many positive and favorable reviews of Five Star Dog Resort, in particular, Daren Hamlin.We left our dog with Daren and staff for three weeks, they provided on and off leash training. A bit pricey, but WELL WORTH IT! His demeanor around other dogs and neighbors is exceptionally noteworthy.One would think writing a review would be a great compliment, which is true......However, we just rescued a 1 year old Ridgeback from a local organization and brought her directly to Daren for the same great training and service! All of this was arranged on a Sunday with NO notice......Thank you!
Daren has been very helpful in boarding our dog when we travel. She isnt comfortable around other dogs and the kennels at 5 Star do not force dogs to see each other all the time. This greatly reduces her anxiety and ours when leaving her. It is obvious when talking to Daren that he genuinely cares about dogs and is passionate about quality care and training. He is great at offering advice on nutrition too. We have been very pleased with our experiences with Daren and 5 Star.
We sent our 9mo old pup Rigley to Five Star Dog Resort for On-Leash training with Darren. We felt so comfortable after reading the reviews and our initial assessment for Rigley, that we had no hesitations dropping him off. Darren is so passionate about what he does and knowledgeable of each individual dog’s needs. Our Rigley spent about a month with the Five Star Dog Resort team and came home an absolute rock star! We are so impressed by and proud of Rigley’s improved confidence, obedience and self-restraint. The team obviously took wonderful care of Rigley and we are looking forward to sending him back for Off-Leash training soon!
5 Star is the best! My two staffys go crazy in the back seat before we even pull in the driveway! The staff is friendly, helpful and goes above and beyond to not only take care of our babies but also to make sure we are comfortable leaving them! I highly recommend doing a bath when you leave. Their baths last almost 2weeks on our dogs and smell amazing!! Nettie and Bandits home away from home!!
My dog, Ricky Ricardo, has been a customer of Five Star for about 3 years and we could not be more thrilled! Ricky Ricardo is a working dog and Darren worked with his to refine some skills in order to get a very difficult certification. He passed with flying colors! We also use Sadie the groomer and both Ricky Ricardo and I adore her. She takes excellent care of him and always puts the health of the pet first. You can tell she genuinely loves animals and has a passion for what she does! She gets Ricky Ricardo ready for his photo shoots and everyone asks who his groomer is. Highly recommend everyone at Five Star! Love them!!!
Darren is the consummate professional in dog training. We brought him our 15 month old Golden Retriever who was essentially terrible on leash, pulling and excitable when approaching other dogs!! In the span of one week, shes a changed dog! She even presents herself differently on lead like a dog with a purpose! My husband thought he had been given the wrong dog she was so incredibly changed and well-behaved! Thank you Darren, we will see you next month with our other golden puppy Dudley!!
Our fur babies are ALWAYS excited when we pull up to Five Star!! They run straight to the door. Weve been coming here for 8 yrs and its the first place weve found that we are as comfortable as the dogs are. People are very attentive and caring to our pups. They handle any special needs...food, meds, etc with great care as well. Highly recommend!
Sept 2020We recently switched groomers here to use Saddie. Our little one looks great!The staff, even during Covid-19, were equally helpful and pleasant to work with. Perhaps, most importantly, they all seem to work well together.We look forward to our next appointment.

Darren is THE Dog Whisper!! I have 2 Akitas (stubborn dogs) one is 9 year old female and the other is a 1 year old female puppy. She grew up with Koko as a puppy but for some reason started turning against her, they got into a fight probably 3- 4 times, it was scary and we thought we were either going to have to put Kiki down or give her away. Our Vet recommended Darren @ Five Star. Kiki spent a month with him,WOW what a difference!! She has gained confidence and structure, she is now a wonderful dog and we were able to reincorporate her back into the household. She is now able to get along with Koko and when I take them on a walk, it is heaven, she stays right by my side, total control. THANK YOU DARREN!!
We have an 8 month old German Australian shepard who was too smart for his own good and an energy level that was over the top. Max was a good dog over all but was out of control. Darren and his company came highly recommended by a friend. So we set an appointment to meet him. What took me by surprise right away was that he was interviewing us. He wanted to make sure that my family and I are going g to be part of the training and not drop the dog off and hope for the best. Since Max is my 12 y/o sons dog he gave him some homework... watch certain YouTube videos and also reading some basic training papers. Well turns out that was everyones homework.Long and short of it is that old saying ya get what ya pay for.... as far as we are concerned this was the best money we have spent on our dog. Max is a completely different dog. Well behaved yet he still has his puppy moments. We also learned alot about how and why and when we should correct the dog and when not to. The training isnt just the dog but also the owners... and wow what a big difference. Since we are so ecstatic about how the training went and how well behaved Max ...we also will be using their other services.We will highly recommend Darren and 5 Star Dog resort. He will meet and surpass your expectations. I could add so much more. But they live up to their name and exceed it. You want or need your dog trained and you want to be part of it so you have a better behaved family member at home... this is definitely the place.
I am amazed. We took our dog to them and asked for some training. We left her for a little over two weeks, and when we came to pick her up, she was far more obedient that we could have ever expected. She does everything pretty much perfect now - sit, lay down, stay, go to your house (crate), get in your place (bed) - when we release her, we say youre through...otherwise she waits for our command. She will do almost anything for us since all she really wants is love from us so she wants to please us. Our dog is a 15 months old, however I have seen them train older dogs with identical results. I can assure you that you will not be disappointed with this group. The are the elite of the elite. I promise you that if you hire them you will not be disappointed. I am a real customer and just want everyone to know about these guys. Put your dog in their hands and just watch and enjoy.

We’ve been using Five Star Dog Resort for over two years now for boarding and grooming. Always a great experience, the staff and owner know what they’re doing and our dog always comes home happy.
I have brought my fur baby for both grooming and boarding. She literally pulls to get in the door and is so excited to be there. She shows no anxiety about leaving me. They are very loving and wonderful people who truly care for my girl.
5 Star has taken care of my baby when I travel on weekends and my occasional meetings in San Diego, it was a fantastic place and felt very comfortable leaving her with them,until more recently it seems as it is turning for the worse. Besides for the young man Nick that seems so coordinated and helpful the others are strange and do not seem happy. A young man think his name is Bradon does not represent a caring person at the check in desk. I have even encountered him yelling at another employee while tugging a dog harshly ,as he did not know I was there waiting to pick up my dog. the Owner seems to be arrogant as I have encountered an occasion where I seen him try to take charge and take over a simple task that the employee was doing and he screwed it up when it was done right the first time . There was a Very polite Red head girl who was knowledgeable and mature and was a Assistant manager or something working there that always made me feel good about going away and the good hands my baby was in, I had asked about her and was told by bradon avoiding my question with a smerky attitude that she is not a manager and he need not worry about her because he is there now. The Groomer Sandy is Amazing ,but the rest of the place I cant even imagine going back anymore.I found another place that my wife and myself are very happy with And much more professional touch then the owner of 5 star care to give clients. Beware! some of these other reviews are so far off of the truth. I would have given it it 5 stars if it was 6 months ago,but from the feelings i get now about the way it is run, I could honestly never do that
I have been taking my beloved pit bull, Hoss, for both kennel and training services for almost a year. I was referred to this facility by another trainer, when we discovered that Hoss may not prefer the company of other dogs and needed special boarding/training. Hoss was welcomed with open arms, and he LOVES seeing his favorite people at Five Star. I have signed Hoss up for his second board-and- train session so that I can control him off-leash. Daren did an amazing job with Hoss during the first training camp such that I now enjoy taking Hoss around the neighborhood on walks without worrying about issues. Not a fancy place, but it is the best place for a dog!
Left my pups here for almost 2 weeks over Christmas. They were healthy and happy in this no bark, no cage facility. Bonus, my Alaskan Malamute now drops the ball for fetch. Guess we got a little free training!
There is no other place that I would ever board my dog - Honey actually jumps out of my car and runs to the door excited to be there - her home away from home. Darren and his staff take excellent care of Honey - they know her and what she needs - I never have one moment of worry when Honey is there - I have recommended family members to Five Star and they are now clients as well. Love this place!

Our dog loves going to Five Star Dog Resort. If we take her only to be groomed, she pouts all day long when we get home. It is wonderful having such a safe, caring environment!
This was really the best option available when we went to the Smoky mountains! The guy who took our dog in was very obviously kind and loving to all the animals. They live on a beautiful property. BE ADVISED when you think youve gone too far just keep going 😁
I feel confident and comfort leaving my dogs. Today when I dropped them off, they were so excited to get back to the kennel area. They ran right to the door and didn’t give me a second thought. The staff does a great job with the dogs.
Negative environment! Do not take your dog here for training. I worked here for 3 months and while I was there I witnessed the owner/trainer hang a dog in the air by a leash and training collar for trying to nip, multiple injuries due to unsafe doors and gates, (dogs chewing broken fence causing mouth wounds and clawing under doors with sharp pieces that cause paw wounds) if youre familiar with training collars some of them have teeth. One dog suffered a puncture to its neck as a result of yanking the collar tight. Very heavy handed with the dogs. Please beware.
Daren has done an excellent job of training our two collies (and us). We were very impressed with his work on-leash, so now they are going through the off-leash training.
Great place to keep your pet. They take good care of our dog and we like the option of inside/out rooms, which are more expensive at $45 per day. A bit expensive, but we know our dog like this place.
Incredibly disappointed in the owner. My mom was in a car accident this morning and had to pull into their parking lot. Her car was totaled and she was shaken up. The owner was rude to her and bothered by her and the situation. He even made her move her car while holding up the bumper of her totaled car. I will now never take my pets here.
I wouldnt take our Afghan Hound anywhere else for grooming, Sadies the best. Ownership is always improving the facility and upgrading the boarding.
Our dog LOVES to go there. Shes happy when she gets there. . . And happy when she leaves. That means theyve taken great care of her while weve been away!!!

2022-04-22We are so thankful we found this company. This was our first puppy and we’re clueless of what we we’re in store for. After about 2 weeks of trying to train our dog on our own, we brought him in. We decided to do on leash and off leash training. It was worth every penny. Our dog listens to directions and respects us. We learned that dogs want to be trained and it makes them have a better personality. We also board our dog here because we know he’s in great hands and our dog enjoys going back. Everyone on their staff is great. I Highly recommend 5 Star Dog resort

2022-03-16We added a rescue pup to the family late last year….but having no real experience with dogs we needed help. Daren was recommended to us by the people we adopted Apollo from so we signed up for training as soon as we could. To his credit, Daren does his best to set expectations and, as many have posted in their reviews, it’s not just about training the dog - but rather about training people. Apollo is still a puppy (8mos as of this post), but with Daren’s help we’ve been able to settle him down and get him to walk on leash and are currently working to walk off leash. Still in the throws of that, but we’ve had great success. It’s a process and not as easy as flipping a switch, but Daren knows dogs and they love him - it’s apparent when we come back to see him for check ins. If you are looking for a trainer, I’d definitely give Daren & Five Star Dog Resort a call.

2022-01-04To say that Daren has changed our lives would be an understatement. We have one German Shepherd that has been a breeze to train (she’s almost 8 now) but when we got our male German Shepherd puppy in July of 2020 it didn’t take us long to realize we were in over our heads. We tried a previous trainer without much luck (and actually some bad side effects). As he got bigger, we realized that we’d have to try again with a different trainer or soon he’d be too strong for me to handle.That’s when we met Daren. From our first phone conversation we knew we were in good hands. We set up a consultation immediately and after meeting him we knew he was the right man for the job. Daren has a deep knowledge of dog psychology (and human psychology) and within the first few sessions we saw remarkable results. Daren is incredibly perceptive and will pick up on things you never realized you were doing that cause your dog to react in a certain way.He doesn’t talk about it much, but Daren is a person who has trained police dogs, search and rescue dogs, and even dogs who jump out of helicopters. He’s seen it all, trained it all, and no issue is too big (or dog too crazy) for him.Now when we go out of town, you can already guess where we leave Huey. Daren cares for these animals as if they are his own (and I’ve seen how much he loves his own two dogs). If you are boarding with him, just know this – he has intentionally designed and built his facility with dog psychology in mind, so that they are as happy, safe, clean, and comfortable as they can be.We are life-long fans for sure. Take it from a dog mom that is super protective of her fur babies, this is where you want to go.

2022-01-06I recommend Five Star Pet Resort for bathing and for training. We have a Mastiff-mix. He can be timid and challenging we think because of his life before the animal shelter we found him in. Darin and the staff trained us so that we can provide this poor pup with a second chance at life. And, that’s amazing!!

2021-12-19When Daren, told me it was easy to train the dogs, not as easy to train the humans, I thought I understood. But nothing could have prepared me for the change I saw when I brought my 5LB Chihuahua/Corgi mix Star home. She was a different dog. Only 5months old she is just developing her own personality and that is in part because of our neighborhood dog whisperer, Daren.I had a Chihuahua/Terrier mix Jersey, for 16yrs and was never able to really get her to respond to commands or pay attention unless I was screaming. Something, I really did not like. So, when Jersey Girls time was up and I found Star, I was determined to have a different experience of dog ownership.When I saw how Star responded to Daren after her two weeks of in-boarding, I was so impressed I knew I had found the right place. The Five Star Dog Resort has an incredible team led by Daren. Star just came home and boy are we on a journey together. :) I am being trained by her each day. Star is testing me which he prepared me for. But I stay committed to our journey together. I understand things I never could have without this companies support and look forward to more words of wisdom as this human is being trained!!!Thanks to all of you at Five Star!!!

2022-01-03I’m honestly not sure where to start. We have a one year old Bernadoodle named Peyton. He hasn’t ever been mean, but he pulled on his leash a LOT and often barked at other dogs. We tried using a dog trainer before Darren and the results were marginal at best. I actually met Darren when we boarded our dog. He got Peyton to calm down immediately and suggested that we find a trainer. Never did I feel hard sold or that Peyton would be some kind of business transaction. We decided to try Darren, despite not having a great experience with the other trainer. I can’t emphasize enough how much Peyton improved.Since we’ve had Peyton back from Darren, he’s much less anxious, heels on the leash and will lay down and stay for 10+ minutes at a time. He’s a completely different dog. Sometimes dogs don’t like trainers or going to stay overnight. Make no mistake, Peyton LOVES Darren and we do too.I highly recommend Darren as a dog trainer (and whisperer) or for boarding your dog.

2022-02-23Daren worked closely with us to develop the right on-leash training program for our 5yr old rescue. We are extremely happy with the results and will be moving on to off-leash training.We’ve also used Five Star for boarding and feel very comfortable with the staff and accommodations.We highly recommend Daren and the pack at Five Star.

2022-05-07TIME OUT FOR DOGS ? Yes it works !!! We went to Darren with a huge problem for us, we thought we would have to rehome one of our beloved dogs. Our 15 year year old Highland Westie and 14 month old Great Pyrenees had decided that they did not like each other and started to fight, with the Westie on the loosing side even though he started the fights. Darren explained in detail the psychology of their behavior and a plan for time out when they started to fight. IT WORKED !!!! THANK YOU DARREN.

2020-03-14No doubt about it, Darren and his awesome staff are the best. Our chocolate lab puppy did inboard training for both on leash and off leash. The result was impressive and our pup loves going to see the Five Star family. Highly recommend.

2019-05-30Daren is an amazing owner and dog trainer. We recently did on leash and off leash training with him and our dog has improved so much! No more pulling us on walks and he listens to us. We trust Daren with not only training but keeping our dog overnight. Highly recommend!
