Just started with my 18 year old son. The coaches are top notch with real experience and the culture is fantastic. They know how to ease you into the training while creating a sense of respect and fun. Theres a virtuous cycle here: theyre awesome people and so they attract great people to their space. We plan on being here for a long time.
Finding this gym has been amazing! Not only have I gotten in shape with the TFW classes, but Ive also gained a community of the best people supporting me. Ive been going to TFW for about a year now and I just started martial arts to learn self-defense and the coaches were great at easing me into it and helping to build my confidence. Great place to work out, and to build community.
I’ve been training at Sbg for a little under 2 months and so far my experience has been nothing but fantastic. The coaches are incredible in both their knowledge of the fight game and as people in general. They create an environment that is both fun and challenging, while also ensuring that everyone is getting better every time they step in to the gym. If you’re interested in mma/bjj this is the place for you!
Although everyone has different individual goals, we do them together as a team at SBG Athens. With close to 300 members, we all cant be wrong about the best martial arts and fitness facility in Athens. It has been the best decision of my life.SBG Athens is the only gym in Athens and the surrounding areas that has Six legitimate Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belts. You read that correctly, SIX! Its also the only gym that caters to 3 year olds in the Micro Monkeys program and the only other Training For Warriors group fitness program in Georgia besides Warner Robins. It should be noted that the least important thing that happens here is martial arts, as Coach Rory Singer would say. I would say that the most important stuff comes from the community that has been created at the gym...for example - in TWO weeks, the members at SBG Athens gathered up 32,000 meals for the Northeast Georgia Food Bank last year!! Thats incredible. Whether its a Red Cross blood drive, Toys 4 Tots, or cleaning up the road that the gym adopted (notably receiving Group of the Year)... SBG Athens gives back to the Athens community the best that we can.If you have children that need some focus and discipline in their lives, or you yourself are wanting to get in the best shape OF YOUR LIFE.. or perhaps you used to be an athlete and want to get back in a team environment, there is something for every person, every -body- at SBG. There are martial arts classes and group fitness classes (under the Training For Warriors program) that are scheduled multiple times throughout the day to fit your busy lifestyle. So, try something different. Give SBG Athens a call and see if it doesnt help shape you into the Warrior youve always wanted to be. I know Im a better human being because of this group of people. Though I am going up against other people on the mats, it boils down to me coming to terms with my demons in order to get on the mat day after day.. especially when I fail.As Coach Liam OShaughnessy (Judo Black Belt and BJJ Purple belt) says, Martial Arts is the fight against yourself.
This is more than just a gym. Its a home with family and thats how they make you feel. This is the only place I have found to match the team atmosphere and unity that public safety and the military gave me. The coaches are top notch as well as the members. If you are looking for a place to call home....this is the place. I am proud to train here and would recommend this place over any other place I looked into. You wont find any where better!!!
SBG is honestly an INCREDIBLE academy!! I found this place on Google, and when I went to visit to talk about signing up, the vibe was real.I knew that from the second I walked through that doorway, that I would love training here. The instructors are so passionate about martial arts and you can see it in their eyes when they teach. They are always willing to help and they encourage making mistakes because it helps you to become stronger and better. The students are so awesome as well! When I arrived for my first class I was extremely nervous and not only did the instructors welcome me and introduce themselves, but anyone who trained there did as well. It really made me feel welcomed and part of the SBG family! The tribe also is very involved with the community whether it be donating to Toys for Tots, or cleaning up the trash on the side roads. I think it is the perfect place to have the youth train at because they are taught to be involved with their community and to be supportive and successful people. SBG boasts that they are more about building a strong and positive character than learning martial arts in general which I think is super cool! All in all, this place has such a positive vibe to it and everyone is always smiling and laughing whenever you step inside. Everyone at SBG is super excited to have new people join the tribe as well because they love to see people grow and learn about martial arts!
I cannot say enough wonderful things about this gym. Myself, my husband, and son all are members. It is truly a family. Every coach and member really cares about everyone.I have been a member less than a year and have lost 37lbs. I started and knew absolutely nothing about how to exercise and eat healthy. The coaches took the time to really help me in every single area.It really is a wonderful thing that our entire family can workout and take classes at the same gym!
I was a member of this gym a few years ago and had to leave due to circumstances outside my control. However, while I was here I learned several valuable techniques. This gym is legit. The coaches are excellent, and they work with you no matter where you are physically. I would recommend this program to anyone who is seeking not only to build their self confidence, but also to find a great group of brothers and sisters.
Master Rory and Master Adam. I just wanted to tell you guys how much I appreciate your facility. I dont even like to put it in the same classification as a gym. Gyms dont have the brotherhood environment and are only about getting in shape. Your facility is way more than that. Its a place to find yourself and become your best. You not only get in shape but you learn about yourself. Your facility has been a blessing to me and my family and thats a debt I can never repay. There are no words to express my gratitude. And coach Shane and coach Jessie have been more inspiration to me than they will ever know. I want to thank all coaches members staff for all youve done not just for me but for my wife and both kids. Womens warrior classes my wife loves the group. And my son recently got into the sub samurai competition team and my daughter is in leadership program. They love it and are always ready to go to gym and have to drag them out. Truly a family environment and great place to be. Again thank you for all you and your staff do for me and my family.
I am writing this review for anyone who is intimidated about and or not sure if they want to pursue a journey in martial arts and fitness at SBG Athens. I joined a few months ago after getting off active duty in the Army. I was originally joining to learn more self defense tactics to defend myself and my family should the situation ever present itself in an unarmed situation. What I did not expect was the brotherhood/sisterhood that I was missing from my time on active duty. When I first walked in the door for my meeting with one of the coaches, I was greeted at the door by a guy who had just got done training jiu jitsu. He easily could have just walked right by me and not said a word, but he didnt. He stopped and asked me if I was going to join and proceeded to tell me how awesome it was and that he hoped he would see me in the gym soon. I wasnt even three steps in the door and I was already dead set on joining. After meeting with coaches and started training I realized that I made the best decision of my life. The coaches, the people you train with, and the vibe of the gym is truly something special. It is community that wants to be involved in your success. I am so glad that I made the jump and started training. Whether you are joining to get in better shape, learn self defense, or trying to become a professional martial artist, there is no better place in the area to do it. I sincerely hope that someone reads this and decides to give SBG Athens a shot. And on a side note because this is something I thought about, if you think that you are going to walk in and a bunch of monsters are going to be punching your head off that could not be further from the truth. It is a very safe and structured environment with great coaches. Make a great decision and come join the Tribe! Hope to see you on the mats.
I started training in martial arts to cultivate self-defense skills and to try to develop a better relationship with my own body. I initially trained elsewhere, but decided I wanted a more holistic martial arts education and began training at SBG instead. For the last three years, SBG Athens has provided the safe yet challenging environment that I needed to help me reach my goals and to continue to formulate new ones. I am surrounded by individuals, coaches, and families of all types and from all walks of life -- yet, over time, they have begun to feel like family. I have never been in a gym that consistently satisfies my needs for exercise, skill mastery, and belonging. If youre on the fence about giving SBG a try, I say DO IT. You will have the opportunity to invest in your own physical, social, and psychological health. The people you encounter at SBG will be allies in your journey and your success. Its an awesome gym, but its also much more than that -- its a community. Best decision I ever made.
I’ve had nothing but good experiences since I stepped foot into SBG Athens. The atmosphere, the people, the coaches, the training regimen, all are wonderful. I can feel a very distinct difference not only in my physical body, but my mind and emotions as well. Having a place where I can come and be surrounded by people doing the same things that I love to do is very empowering. Since starting, I have been able to discontinue taking prescriptions for anxiety and depression with absolutely zero drawbacks. I feel more connected to myself and to others than I have since I was a child. My only regret thus far is that I didn’t join sooner! I think you all are amazing people, and I’m very grateful that you spend your time and effort pouring into other’s lives so we can all attain our goals and grow together. So, from the bottom of my heart, I would like to say thank you. You’ve caused an improvement and had an extremely positive impact in my life, and I’m sure the lives of many others as well. I continue to look forward to what the future holds for myself and my endeavors, and I believe that there’s no better place or people for me to share these experiences with.
Rory and the tribe have been exceedingly welcoming and encouraging. My son started going twice a week and we really liked the atmosphere and the people so I decided to join the beginner classes for adult. We look forward to every time we are at the gym and the coaches are phenomenal at what they do. My son and I both are excited to see where our journey with the tribe takes us.
I am writing this email to tell whoever is reading all about what SBG Athens has done for me. Before SBG life was... chaotic. From the ages of 18 to 24 I had lived in ten different places in five states. You see, right around the time I graduated high school, once all of my friends had gone their separate ways, one parent passed away and the other just sort of disappeared. I had lost my family by blood, family by bond, the structure that was high school and my literal home. When structure and security move out, chaos and uncertainty take its place. So I hopped around the southeast trying to find a reason or the capability to stay in one place. For whatever reason, I ended up here in Athens. It was just the next stop on a road with no end. I had always been drawn to martial arts but when I saw traditional arts, they seemed..off. I just couldnt see them working in a real world setting. On the other hand, Mixed Martial Arts are pressure tested by their nature so I wanted to see what may lie in store for me along that path, SBG was the door to that path. Now I must say, I had always exercised for stress management and to retain my sanity but in the months prior to joining SBG, exercise had stopped working. It did not matter how much I ran, what weight I lifted, or how long I spent exercising, it had lost its effectiveness. It had no purpose and because pushing myself through exercise was the only secure thing in my life, once I lost it I felt like I had lost a chunk of my own purpose. At the time I thought SBG would get me a great workout, train me in martial arts that actually work, and would let me apply myself towards a goal. Well all of that did happen, however I found something so much more. I found the most positive and supportive group of human beings in my life. Each coach and member of the gym genuinely cared about me and wanted to help me not just in my goals within the walls of SBG but in my life outside as well. To me that was almost bizarre. Im from a world that does not do that, the world that chews up the people who cant stand on their own, the world that makes you stronger or makes you homeless. For the first time in years I felt like I didnt have to stand on my own. At first I did not know how to accept it and honestly sometimes I still dont but I know that this group is something special. We are all focused on making one another better as human beings first, and better martial artists second. Within all of this I had found my passion that is martial arts, and also a reason to finally stay in one place for a while. I didnt know what would happen next in life, how Id make enough money or survive, but I did and whether or not my Tribe at SBG knows it, I did it with their support. I now own a home and Im not worried about losing it. I have good people around me and have regained a sense of family that I didnt think Id ever get back. I would be cheating you if I did not mention that I am also in the best shape of my life. The thing about that is when you follow the training program and come to classes regularly at SBG, you almost magically get in shape. Im stronger now at 185lbs than I was at 205lbs, I have more endurance, and now I actually know how to defend myself. Id also like to think that my character has improved as well. I cannot tell you all of the benefits you will find at SBG but I can tell you that in one way or another, youll become an even better version of yourself. If you are on the fence about whether or not to give SBG Athens a try, these next sentences are my advice to you. Everything you put into SBG, you will get back in some form. Whatever your goal, we can help you reach it. If you think you cant do it, you can and you will. You will have fun, you will be safe, you will learn amazing skills and you will enrich your life. The only catch is you have to earn it, but each and every step of the way you will have a Tribe by your side, working together to become the best possible version of ourselves.
This is a truly special gym. I joined the Training For Warriors Challenge group 3 months ago and decided to stay on as a member because I loved it! The challenge was a great way to start as a beginner and learn (or re-learn) movements and nutrition basics. The coaches are welcoming, encouraging & non-judgmental which was important for me as someone who felt like I was starting from the ground level after having a baby. The TFW classes are a good mix of weights and cardio. All of the members are such quality people & the gym has a family feel. I highly recommend coming in for a class! I feel like I have gotten my mental and physical strength back & love going to my classes each week.
I just wanted to find a gym for my 14 yr old daughter to learn MMA. we went to other gyms and then came to SBG. I liked what I saw. But the one thing that continues to impress me is that when I am there waiting for my daughter to finish class almost everyone that walks by me stops and speaks to me. Very Friendly gym! Very professional atmosphere!
My experience at The Hardcore Gym has been very positive since I became a member in February 2013. I joined their Blueprint program in February 2013 at a weight of about 265 lbs. When I moved into the HAP program in June of that year I had lost over 65 lbs. I would not have been able to reach that goal had it not been for the constant encouragement, training, and health tips provided by the gym.Anytime that I have needed some flexibility with finances or scheduling, they have always been very accommodating and understanding. The coaches are top notch from the adult classes all the way down to the childrens classes as well as the personal trainers. For any person that is considering an alternative to the traditional gym experience and is looking for a fun way to lose weight and at the same time, learn some martial arts skills within a group of people that will become your friends, this is the place for you. If you are looking for a place for your child to learn practical self-defense skills as well as self-confidence and how to deal with a bully, or how to not be a bully, this is the place for your child.
Hands down one of the best decisions I ever made was joining this gym. The coaches and the people are top notch! Coach Adam and Coach Rorys reputations as world class coaches are well deserved. Ive had a chance to train in a number of gyms and none have been as awesome as this one. Totally enriched my life on and off the mat! SBG!!!
I can’t say enough good things about this place. I’ve been going to SBG almost a year now. It really is the best of both worlds. SBG has world class martial arts curriculum/ instruction for those who ambitiously pursue the highest level of martial arts skills or competition. It is also an awesome place for folks like me, with little or no experience. My instructors and classmates could not be more positive and supportive. I am especially grateful for how the higher level people give me room to play and practice my beginner business (technique). I love this place. The instruction is optimal and the mindset is truly that of a supportive tribe. I’m grateful I found SBG Athens.
I dont yet know very much about good Jiu-Jitsu, but I do know that the path leading to it is long and arduous. I often question whether it is a path for which Im cut out.. and I frequently feel inadequate, and unworthy of this tribe for which Ive signed up, this amazing collection of individuals who are striving so adamantly to find better versions of themselves. This is solely a reflection of my own insecurities, and it is nights like tonight that keep my perspective on this in check. I train at one of the best facilities in the WORLD, SBG Athens. I train under some of the best MMA/BJJ coaches to ever play this game, Adam Singer and Rory Singer, and the amazing staff they have cultivated through many years of chasing good people, not just good Jiu-Jitsu. I have so many amazing training partners that I dont even know how to begin thanking them all. Everyone who I had the pleasure of rolling with tonight brought the perfect energy, and it was energy that I had been needing. Im not perfect, but Im here, and Im trying. And Im in the right place for it. Im at SBG, and Ill be ok. Thank you all so much for reminding me.
A little over 6 years ago I was newly divorced with two younger children. I was a bit lost as to what I do next. My son and I started watching MMA and he decided that he wanted to start training. I looked around and decided that SBG seemed like the best option. After a few months of watching the coaches work with my son and him truly enjoying it, I decided to give it a try myself. I had been an athlete well into my 20s and now here I was starting to train mma at 37 years old....people around me thought I was crazy. It was by far the greatest investment that I have ever made in myself, I wouldnt trade any amount of money for the things I have gained. Great friends, a new family, skills to defend myself, personal development to name a few. I soon realized that SBG Athens was exactly where I should be and I would never leave. Along the way I continued to grow both on and off the mat, skills I have developed coaching and competing have translated to success in my job managing large groups of people and teams. If I had to do it all over again, I would only change one thing and that would be to join earlier than I did. One Tribe One Vibe!!!
I joined SBG a year ago with the intention of learning a new skill. I received so very much more. This place is family, its a place that allows you to get comfortable with the uncomfortable. As a therapist by trade, I talk about getting out of your own way and out of your head, and Ive never found something that has pushed me to see this to be so necessary. My loved ones can actually tell when I havent been to the gym because Im more focused and more at peace with myself when Im on the mats regularly. We get better together and Im grateful to have joined. This is SBG, you will be okay (I know I am).
SBG Athens truly has something for everyone. My 3 year old daughter, 5 year old son, my wife, and myself all train and are challenged to grow at the same facility. We train with fighters, accountants, students, scientists, and everything in-between. We have no doubt that we are in the right place. This is family.I really enjoy that everyone starts at the same point. No matter your prior experience everyone starts in Foundations. This allows you to learn how the gym teaches and lets the gym learn more about you. These classes are not just for beginners, they are just as they are labeled, the foundation. All other teaching grows from these fundamentals. As a side note, it is a pretty good filter for keeping out know-it-alls. Everyone at SBG Athens is looking to learn and knows that it is a lifelong process. If you looking to show others how much experience you have, this is probably not the place for you.As I watch my 5 year old son teach a judo throw to an older kids class to earn his teaching chevron, my 3 year old daughter receive a silver medal in her first in house tournament, my wife receive her first stripe on her white belt, or even myself receiving my blue belt, I know were in the right place. SBG Athens is the best thing I could have possibly done for myself and my family. There is no other place I would rather be.
First rate place! This is a fantastic facility and a great learning/training environment no matter your level of skill. SBGs culture is by far the most welcoming of any gym Ive stepped foot in; plus the coaches here are talented and helpful! Further, theres several different programs/classes and seminars available depending on your specific wants and needs. I highly recommend SBG to anyone interested in MMA, Self-Defense, a new physical challenge, and everything in between. 11/10!
Our family has been overjoyed with our experience at SBG Athens. While the facility itself is great, its the staff and programs that make this tribe so wonderful! Everyone is so welcoming and our daughter has thrived. We love that she not only learns physical skills, but they also focus on a positive life skill each month such as kindness, respect, and positive thinking. As school teachers ourselves, its been great to see the way the adults interact with the students. The level of support and respect is amazing. We cant wait to enroll the whole family in classes.
This gym is amazing. The effect the coaches and other staff have had on me for both my martial arts and character has been amazing. They introduced me to the beautiful lifestyle that is Brazilian JuJitsu and I couldnt have asked for anything better. The environment is amazing! So many great walks of life and skill sets. I am grateful I have had the pleasure of knowing such amazing people. I have moved away from this great place due to life but any chance I get I spread the word to my Georgia friends. If you are asking yourself should I send my kids here? Should I train here? Are they going to accept me? I can say yes. Yes you should. Sinse leaving Ga I have obtained my purple belt in BJJ, fought in MMA matches, and began to Coach myself. I catch myself referring to all the lessons and little tid bits I have learned through being at SBG Athens. I recommend this place to 10/10 times. Thank you again Singer brothers, Luke and all the other coaches and faculty.
My first experience at this wonderful gym was at a womens self-defense seminar in February 2017. I loved it so much that I immediately signed up to start taking fitness classes there. The vibe I got from all of the members was one of support and community. This gym is now like a second home to me as I am there almost everyday. The fitness program (Training for Warriors) is unlike any other I have ever experienced. You get killer results since proper form is highly stressed. The coaches are very supportive and can help modify exercises so that people of any strength/ability level can get a great workout! SBG Athens is probably best known for its MMA classes and training. I started doing BJJ at SBG Athens at the end of 2017 and have learned very useful skills for self-defense, which is so important as a woman. Even as a small person (5 tall and 115lbs), I feel like I can defend myself against bigger attackers. If self-defense is not so important to you, professional MMA fighters also train here, so you can get any level of training that you desire. The coaches and members are like a big family, so I feel like I can ask any of them for help if I ever need it. You wont regret it if you decide to join SBG Athens!
I love this gym. Ive already lost 20lbs and counting. Everyone is very supportive. Even though I started out at a MMA/BJJ novice level, all the coaches and classmates made me feel comfortable. I also like the sense of tribe and family. We all support each other and help one another with our goals. I highly recommend this gym if you are looking to change and improve your life! Trust me, the lessons you learn from BJJ and MMA definitely apply to life in general.
Rory and Adam are two of the best, and most caring, coaches you will ever come accross. Despite being known for their success in MMA, youll find that the vast majority of people inside of SBG are 9-5, working class men and women who are looking to get in great shape and actually have fun while theyre doing it. I live an hour from Athens, but I make my way over there whenever possible to train with the SBG team. That says a lot about how welcome I feel, and the quality of their product.
Ive had a great experience training at SBG - Ive been training there for roughly 8 months, and have found the facility and coaching staff to be absolutely top notch. The sense of community at Straight Blast Gym is second to none - Ive trained at other gyms while traveling, but SBG feels like home!
My wife, daughter, and I truly enjoy all aspects of SBG Athens. The kids martial arts program and coaches are exceptional, and my daughter truly enjoys her time there with these exceptional adult role models. She has made new friends and is developing a love of physical activity and confidence/comfort in her own skin. The Training for Warriors (TFW) program is an outstanding physical fitness program in which my wife and I participate weekly. We have seen physical, mental, and emotional improvements in ourselves thanks to TFW.The adult martial arts (BJJ/MMA) program has been a huge benefit to me as well. Not only has this program helped to improve my overall physical fitness, but it has helped improve my overall outlook on life. The most important thing any of us can say about SBG Athens is that we have made so many good friends because of this gym, that we never would have met otherwise. Because of this tribe our lives are better.
I signed up at SBG Athens initially to stay in shape and have an extra curricular activity to enjoy with my 13 year old daughter. Since weve signed up; my daughter has made new friends, her confidence continues to grow, and most importantly she is learning how to accept accountability to someone other than her parents and school faculty. Her coaches have done a fantastic job at facilitating a smooth transition into her training and making her feel welcome. She is learning that she is capable of so much more than she had realized and with every technique she learns, that realization only grows stronger and more clear to her. SBG Athens is a place of growth. Physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually.
We enrolled my son Landon a little over a year ago and he still enjoys it. He looks forward to going to class every week. The coaches and staff are great. If we have any questions or concerns they are happy to help in any way they can. My son has become more confident and outgoing since starting the spider monkey program. Hes bragged about his gym so much his older cousin started to take classes also. Hopefully in the next couple months we will be enrolling my younger son. So thankful for all the coaches and staff at Hardcore Gym for all they have taught my son.
I cant imagine my life without this place. I would literally be a different person. Physically, emotionally, different friends, you name it. The entire fabric of my life was impacted for the better by walking in the door 15 years ago. From humble beginnings, to the top of the MMA world, to what is now a family-oriented approach, Ive been with SBG Athens through all of it. Now I watch my children get coached with the same expertise and care that produced UFC champions, all in the most family-friendly and welcoming environment you can imagine.Walk in the door. Youll be ok, and youll forever be glad you did.
I have been attending classes and training hours at The Hardcore Gym for over a year now. In the beginning I was in the Blueprint Program which prepares new students for their future lessons and training. After a few tests I moved up to take any classes and train as my schedule made available. My schedule allows me to go 4-5 times a week, which sometimes is less than I wish to go. The atmosphere is great and encouraging, the facilities excellent, the team members superb and the coaches second to none. I have done different martial arts for years in different parts of the world, returned to Athens and there simply no other place to train and learn. Try out the free trial, move up a level and get the desire to be there everyday.
Dear friends at SBG Athens Tribe. I would like to take this time to say thank you for all the continued love and support my kids and I have received these past 2 years. And yes, I said 2 years. My husband, Chase and Bayli’s father, passed away tragically November 2016. That day I did not hesitate to notify Chase and Bayli’s coaches. And here’s why. The coaches at SBG have been a constant strength and wisdom in their lives. And I knew my kids would need them more now than ever in that moment. Coaches came to my husbands funeral with open arms and strength and compassion for my kids and my family. And then when it was time for Chase to adjust to his new life. These coaches were on the mat leading him to become a stronger young man. Bayli has since taken on other adventures. For two years this family at SBG has taken my son under their wing and has helped me raise a good boy. Some of my most heartfelt moments are of these men caring for my son’s growth and wellbeing; and at a moments notice it swells my heart with joy and my eyes with tears. They give Chase something I cannot, a bond with men and the wisdom and compassion only a great male role model can provide. Your damn right when Chase gets out of line, like any growing middle schooler does, I quickly throw in the word coaches and his eyes grow big with fear. Not fear of pain but fear to disappoint these men in his life. And that’s because he cares for them. And them him.SBG has continued to help my family stay strong, and sane 😬 more times than I can count. But they have also given me the opportunity to watch my children pursue their goals and have given them experiences that melt my heart. I am sure their father is watching over them and proud of every step they take. And I guarantee he is looking after SBG Athens and giving them a huge hug and thank you.Blessings to allTammi Carter
This is, without any exaggeration, on a very short list of the best martial arts and fitness academies in the country. In the MMA community Adam and Rory Singer are legends, having produced two world champions along with many other top tier athletes, but they are arguably even better at helping non-competitors of all ages to reach their goals and change their lives for the better. The atmosphere at SBG Athens is so fun and positive, its hard to describe until you experience it for firsthand. If you want the best for yourself or you child, this is the place!
My five year-old son was in the Spider Monkeys youth Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) class at The HCG for five months before we moved out-of-state, and my wife and I were amazed to see the amount of personal growth and fun (he wore an ear-to-ear smile almost every class) our son had in just that short time. He went from being hesitant to get on the mat with the class to being one of the first to volunteer for practice grappling sessions after just a few months. The lessons and positive development continued outside class with the Life Skills program, where each month the students have to complete tasks at home and in the community that demonstrate life/personal skills such as kindness, respect, and initiative. The coaches were firm and understanding at the same time, and really brought the best out in all the students. Masters Rory and Adam, the other top coaches, and Ashley know every member, student, and parent and they greet and treat everyone the same; everyone is made to feel comfortable and part of the gym and experience. Our only regret was that we had to move and could not continue our experience with HCG, we are going to try and find a way for our son to continue his BJJ experience in our new community, but whatever we find will be a distant second at best to the HCG in Athens, GA.
The HARDCORE GYM is an awesome place. Ive learned a lot from all the coaches! I started there with only some boxing skills. I have only been at the hardcore gym for six months and Ive learned things from MMA, Brazilian Jiu Jitzu, kick boxing, and just general self defense. This is a great place to learn whether you want to train to get in shape, train to compete, or if you just want to learn how to defend yourself. The staff is really helpful, many of the upper belts are really helpful as well! I just love this place!-Danielle W.
For all the women out there curious about joining a gym, getting started in the martial arts, or looking for a place to continue your training, The Hardcore Gym is a great place to train and with the new schedule and expanded space there is something to fit anyone’s busy life. I have focused mainly on the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and Judo classes but I have also taken women’s fitness classes, used the weight room and equipment – and I’m excited to try more. There are also fantastic seminars that are offered to members that range from nutrition, kettlebells, self-defense, and special martial arts guests. Yes- some great mma fighters have come from The Hardcore Gym but it’s not just for 20-something aspiring UFC fighters. As a small, 42y.o. mother of two I have never felt intimidated, patronized or in any way that I didnt belong there. On the contrary, the coaches, staff and other gym members are respectful and incredibly supportive of your individual goals. You do not have to be an elite athlete or even “in shape” before you start – the gym and coaches will help you get to where you want to be. It’s clean, safe and family friendly. My husband, son (13) and daughter (10) are all members and it is wonderful to be able to share this with them.
I began training at The Hardcore Gym in January of 2011. I trained there for 3 years before I moved to Atlanta for work. Over that time, I earned my blue belt in jiu jitsu, fought for the gym and became an instructor. I took advantage of everything the gym had to offer and loved ever moment of it. I met some of my best friends in life at this place. When Im in town and come train, I am always welcomed with open arms even though I am no longer a member there. The people at HCG really know how to make you feel welcome, and they go the extra mile to take care of you from calling you if you miss class to make sure everything is ok to driving you to the doctor if you get injured. And, dont be scared about the last comment. Out of my 3 year there, I only witnessed 1 injury because safety is the most important thing at HCG. Its something they preach every day.The facility is great. They have everything you need to achieve what ever your fitness goals. There are certified personal trainers if youre looking to get in shape, nutritionists to help you with your diet, 5 jiu jitsu black belts, a judo black belt and many UFC and other high level professional fighter to answer any martial arts question you can possibly think of.When people ask about my time in Athens, I always bring up HCG because my best memories are from there, so give them a try. I promise you wont regret it.
I have been at The Hard Core Gym for three months now. My journey began when one day I was just sick of feeling tired and out of shape all of the time.So I was on a mission to find a gym that I would not just sign up for and go to a few times a month and then just stop going to all together but I gym I would stick with. After researching I went to The Hard Core Gym to see what it was all about. I have always been a big fan of MMA but thought that was for more experienced people. So I signed up for the warrior women program. The coaches are amazing! They truly care about you and are very supportive. My schedule is king of crazy and they worked with me to get into any class I could make it to. I am currently taking both warrior women and foundations(mma) classes and LOVING IT!! The best part of my story is that even though I am a mother of three and work full time, I am finally making time for myself and I have never felt better!
SBG has changed my life. I woke up one morning and I was mid 40’s, extremely out of shape and generally not very healthy. I wanted to make a change. But the monotony of trudging on some exercise machine or treadmill was just not very motivating. Then a client told me I should check out SBG. To be honest I was extremely apprehensive at first. I had visions of all these big tough guys making fun of this out of shape old bearded guy. Nothing could be further from the truth. From the moment I walked into the door I felt welcome. Everyone, from coaches to students to trainers, has been incredibly supportive and encouraging. In the 5 weeks that I’ve been there I’ve already lost 18lbs and I feel better than I have in years. There were other benefits that I couldn’t even have imagined. All the stress that I use to carry home from work every night, I now leave on the mat at the gym. When I go home I’m more relaxed and I’m able to put all my focus on my family. So I’m in better shape, I’m a better dad and a better husband. And it all started by having just enough courage to walk through the door.If you’ve been thinking about getting in shape. Or maybe you’ve been looking to make some kind of change in your own life. Or maybe you’ve even considered SBG but like I was you’re feeling a little apprehensive – trust me this is the right place for you. I promise you will have more fun, you will get in shape and it will change your life. Thanks SBG!
Hey, Cheeto fingers! Yea Im talking to you. Look I know youre bummed that Game of Thrones is done for the year, but let me postulate something. In the 9 months until the new season airs and the 12 in which it will have ended you could be well on your way to accomplishing all your health goals, if not accomplished them by that time.If youve talked to me for longer than 30 minutes, then youve probably heard me mention Straight Blast Gym of Athens. SBG isnt just a Mixed Martial Arts gym. Its an awesome & diverse community that is dedicated to helping people reach goals. Whether your goal is to be a Jiu Jitsu competitor, mixed martial artist, dropping some pounds, or just learning some kick ass stuff that may come in handy someday.Theyve got incredible kids programs, classes strictly for women (in case training with a bunch of dudes isnt your thing), and a program thatll take you from a person who doesnt know the difference between a jab and a cross to one that understands the complexities of footwork. So dust off those fingers and give them a call or just drop in to see whats up. If youre nervous about taking those first steps through the door... Let me know and Ill help you out! This is #SBG , you will be ok.
I have 2 children in the Micro Monkeys Program at SBG Athens. A 3 year old boy and a 4 year old girl. Like many children his age, my son had issues listening and taking instructions, whereas my daughter was very timid and scared to the point it had become a concern for my wife and I. After 8 months of classes at SBG both children have overcome their issues to say the least. My daughter is fully out of her shell and she even enjoys grappling with other children, whereas before she would not even play tag because she did not want her peers to touch her. My son struggled for the first few months and failed to participate in most class activities, but the coaches never gave up on him (even though I had at times) and now he is fully engaged in class and even asks for extra practice at home. Both my children have grown exponentially because of the incredible coaching staff at SBG. Words cannot express my gratitude and I highly recommend SBG to anyone looking to enrich the life of their child(ren).
One of the best decisions we have ever made for our son was joining SBG Growing Gorillas Program. Not only has it helped build his confidence and taught him lifelong skills, he has also made lifelong friends and mentors. It is truly a family of coaches and parents that are always willing to help you and your family-on and off the mat. Its not just a sport it is a way of life of teaching them to become the best they can in all aspects of their lives. LOVE LOVE LOVE our SBG family
I took part in a 28 day challenge with Training for Warriors Athens, I then joined! I’ve since lost weight, gained muscle and I feel great! I can’t say enough good things about this organization! The coaches are top notch, my teammates are very encouraging, I’ve found a home here, I look forward to training! Being a type 2 diabetic, my A1C was extremely high, I’ve gotten it under control and hope to come off of my medicines soon! I would encourage anyone looking for a wonderful experience to come try it out!
I travel throughout the southeast for business and stop into many gyms (see my other reviews); HardCore Gym in Athens is my top pick. All around the best gym for everything I need.I was new to BJJ in 2012 and decided to drop into HCG one night to get some training in. If you know anything about this place (and the fighters that have come out of here), there might be some trepidation or fear before you step through the door (especially as a newbie). There was no reason to be nervous. Rory and Adam Singer are two of the best coaches I have ever run into. I was welcomed onto their mats and had a great night of training. Two years later anytime I am close to Athens (sometimes I make special trips just to train) I stop in. And if you are advanced in your training you probably arent going to find another gym in the southeast US with 4 black belts teaching and training, every class, every night.Do yourself a favor, get better, get into The HardCore Gym and train with the best.
I was extremely excited when I found the opportunity for my son to get a feel for this craft for free. I knew if he liked it, it would definitely be worth it. He is a big ball of energy, but he also has a speech delay. He is at times withdrawn. Other times hes bursting with energy. Today, he was full of energy. He was in a new environment that he has never been to, or even heard of for that matter. We didnt last 20 minutes before my 3 year old was told that he would listen or leave the gym. (He ran from the micro monkey area to the big kid area)He knows what listen means. He does not yet understand ultimatums. I explained that he processes things slower than most kids his age. The lady coaches who he interacted with were wonderful. The guy in charge did not have patience for my 3 year old. As a parent, you want your child to have structure. Even on their most difficult days you still want them to be comfortable in their own skin. Im sure SBG might not run into kids like mine on the regular, but I can honestly say I have never had to feel like my child was a problem for anyone before today. Hes not a problem child, hes not a bad kid, he is extremely active, and he has problems with communication. I kicked myself when I returned home bc I felt like I introduced him to something he wasnt ready for. However, it only took 20 minutes for me to feel like neither he nor I belonged here. Maybe in the future someone will bring their child and have an experience that surpasses ours and I want that for any child who struggles with anything.
One Tribe. One Vibe. Man, everyone at SBG Athens Fitness, MMA & BJJ In Athens Georgia is straight vibin and yet again it makes for a bitter sweet goodbye. Id like to thank Lee Curtis McMichael for taking the time to contact me when I was first looking into coming into SBG. People often overlook the people at the front desk or on the phone but they are the first people you interact with and completely set the tone for how things will go. I really dont know where to start or finish for that matter. I learned so much from not just the coaches but the students as well. Thank you for letting me be a part of your Tribe for a few weeks. I had a great time and if Im passing through town Ill be sure to stop in. until next time; keep Vibin!
Choosing The HardCore Gym for our son changed our lives. Much like many kids his age, he was experiencing bullying and having behavior issues. Only three months after starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, our son completely changed! We were and still are astounded at what little time it has taken to make major changes in him. He is now respectful, well-behaved, confident, and knows what steps to take in defending himself. He looks up to his coaches with nothing but honor and respect and has become part of a brotherhood that will last a lifetime. If you are in search of a safe gym for your child or yourself, look no further! We cant thank Master Rory Singer enough for being here for our son in his journey thus far.
Sadly, I wanted to give this gym 5 stars SO bad. I bought a groupon for the womens bootcamp classes and called twice to get the schedule and a girl there Ashley said I had to come in for an assessment in order to do that. Fine, not a big deal. Well THEN she called me back and said they looked me up on Facebook and saw I had worked for another gym two years ago [in 2011] and because of that, I couldnt train with them at all. Both my husband and I were interested in the gym and a couple friends had recommended it to me. You would think they would want fitness-lovers in the gym and not just beginners but I guess not. Disappointed with the communication, customer service and business model and sadly, I can never recommend Hardcore to any Athens friends. My Uncle Marshall Davis owns a fight gym in Atlanta and he mentioned Hardcore was a good place to train... and even if it is, I couldnt get past the terrible business model and customer service.
The Hardcore Gym is a fantastic gym. Ive been a member for over 5 years now and will continue to be a member for years to come. Ive lost over 40lbs since joining -- and kept it off. All of the coaches are really knowledgeable and want you to achieve your goals. It could be weight loss, fitness, confidence, or even to be an MMA world champion. Coach Dave is also hilarious too. If you want to lift weights, kick box, learn jiu jitsu or boxing, they have top notch facilities.
My son started the Spider Monkey class at the age of 4. He had always been shy and he was not progressing socially as his peers were. Upon joining HCG he was hesitant, to say the least, about joining in with the class. We spent many classes sitting with him on the mat letting him watch. The coaches and staff at HCG were more than patient and encouraging every step of the way. The coaches took time to sit with him, talk him through everything and encourage him to get out on the mat. After a few weeks, one coach came in, on his day off, to keep his promise to my son and he got out on the mat that day. He has done amazing since. The confidence this program continues to promote in my son is evident in all aspects of his life. He is more outgoing at school and socially he is growing leaps and bounds. We are so thankful to the staff and program at HCG. Second to none!!!
My mom found SBG online when we decided to find my 5 year old son some sort of sports/activities to do while hes out of school for the summer. I was very interested in finding him some sort of martial arts class, as I figured it would be a good way to keep him active, as well as help him learn some important things like following directions, etc. We came for Marlons trial lesson, and I was impressed from the moment we first walked in the door. Coach Cate met us and I immediately felt welcomed and involved. My younger son Alex has autism and I wasnt sure how he would handle an environment like a busy gym, and of course I wasnt sure how he would be accepted, especially if he was disruptive due to nervousness or excitement. Marlons trial lesson was a trial for all of us, on several levels. Well, it went much better than I could have hoped. Marlon did wonderful, and watching him that first class was seriously one of my favorite mom moments so far! Alex handled things as well as I could expect, and best of all, no one seemed bothered that he was there. In fact, quite the opposite! So far everyone has been perfectly accepting of him and even interested in him and his situation. That alone means more to me than I can put into words.Cate talked with me while Marlon took his class, showing me around the gym and pointing out faces that were soon to become familiar. As we talked, I found myself incredibly interested in taking classes myself! Its something Ive been interested in for years, but the circumstances were never right (usually not having enough time or money). Well, maybe the circumstances still arent right...but Ive learned since Ive gotten older that if I want something bad enough and am willing to do the work, I can almost always find a way to make it work. So I decided to go for it. I signed us both up!Since then, I have discovered an enormous enthusiasm for training and learning. I thoroughly enjoy the classes, and have already noticed myself getting in better shape, which is definitely a good thing! I cant wait to learn more and advance. I feel like Ive found something I didnt even know I was looking for! Its a really great feeling. On top of that, I feel much less stressed and Im sleeping better. I feel like these things, plus the values that Marlon and I are BOTH learning will help me to be a better parent and a better person in general!Marlon does well and I enjoy watching him learn and get stronger. He definitely has issues focusing and following directions, but I see him trying to do better and I know he is in the right place. Im excited for many reasons...with his little brother having special needs, a lot of the time the focus is on Alex by necessity. This sometimes (ok, frequently!) causes Marlon to act out for attention. Im glad that he has this, something thats all for him. The fact that Im doing it too gives us something to bond over. The best part of the whole thing is the tribe aspect. Everyone I have met since coming here is welcoming and friendly even though Im a beginner. Also, Ive met some other moms while on the sidelines at Marlons classes, and Ive made some new friends. All in all, I really feel like Ive found my village! I cant recommend this place enough!!

2022-05-17SBG Athens is standard for martial arts training in the area. If you are considering bjj or mma in Athens, this is the only place you should go. Coaches Adam and Rory Singer run a phenomenal gym with a warm and welcoming culture. They are experienced coaches and fighters. They have a spotless facility and top of the line equipment and mat space. Not all martial arts gyms are created equal. If you’re going to invest in yourself and dedicate the time and commitment to learning bjj or mma, you’ll be doing your future self a disservice to go anywhere else but a SBG Athens. Whether you’re interested in fighting professionally or just looking to get in shape and learn how to defend yourself, SBG Athens is a good fit for people of all ages. Men, women and children, doesn’t matter, it’s a great fit for all! One tribe one vibe!

2022-06-29This is a great gym. The facility is nice, with great padding, multiple class areas and a large weight room. There is always something going on!As you walk in the receptionist greets you with a big smile. She will connect you with one of the coaches for your visit. Our son did a trial class and loved it.There are all ages and types of people there. Young children, classes with teenagers to middle-aged folks, all shapes and sizes. But everybody looks like theyre having a great time. It feels like a place where everybody is accepted based on your interest and effort. The second noteworthy thing is that the people who work here are super nice. They seem talented, yes, but the nice part was a pleasant surprise. I guess I was expecting a gruff grizzled warrior... But you actually get nice, not too grizzled warriors! The other students are also very nice. My son often is Sparring with someone he doesnt know, and he always says he was a nice guy!.The experience is certainly worth the price. I am sure there are a lot of plans, but we chose one that offers lots of classes, seems very reasonable. My son found this place based on a recommendation from a friend and it is certainly a great choice for us. It seems like the kind of place where you are going to get very qualified instruction at a pace that you determine and the option to progress as far as you want based on your interest.

2022-07-11My son has been doing jiu jitsu at SBG for about a year, and LOVES it! After nearly a year of warming the bench, with zero experience in martial arts, and at almost 40yo, I also decided I wanted to give it a go as well. Partially so I could get better at wrestling my 7yo, but also for fun and exercise. This gym does a tremendous job of easing and welcoming everyone from every skill level/gender/age and creates a safe yet challenging environment. They somehow make something that at first sounds intimidating/scary, to thing that’s both enjoyable and attainable. If you would have told me in 2020 that I would be doing jiu jitsu today and loving it, I would have laughed at you. But here I am, showing up, doing my best, and failing forward; and that’s all they expect of you. The coaches are knowledgeable, kind and patient. They help elevate you and push your comfort zones, while also recognizing that means something different for everyone.

2022-02-25Amazing place to train with amazing coaches. Unfortunately my time was cut short at this gym because of relocation for work, however am very thankful the coaches and the growth atmosphere that I got to be apart of for the period of time that I was in Athens. If you are looking for a strong community, coaches that care, and a ton of fun, please give SBG Athens a try.

2022-02-18My son has been attending the jiu jitsu classes for about 6 months now and I have seen a big improvement in his character. He may only be 3, but he has come out of his shell and grown more confident every day. He loves to come home and practice his moves.Watching what he was doing looked like so much fun that I joined too! Ive been attending classes for about 6 weeks and have fallen in love. The coaches become like family and so do the teammates. They really do mean it when they say one tribe one vibe. At SBG I felt immediately accepted and connected. My son and I both love coming here and look forward to it every week.

2021-11-05A year ago my wife and I were looking for a gym to join in the Athens area. We came from a small town with a great gym, and were apprehensive that we would be able to replicate that. We found SBG and have been thriving with weight training and martial arts. The vibe, facility, coaches, and owners are top notch. We appreciate what they have built every time we walk through the doors.

2022-06-17Never been to a mma gym before and I’ve only been going here for a month, but I really enjoy how the coaches preach their word. They really do mean “one tribe, one vibe” and I really appreciate that.

2021-04-14SBG Athens is the best gym Ive ever been to. My whole family started training here in 2018 and it quickly became my favorite place to be. The coaches are world class, the environment is welcoming, and the people you train with are awesome. I really cant say enough good things about this gym.

2022-03-10SBG is the most legitimate MMA gym in Athens. The program is very intensive, and costs a good bit, but it is worth every cent. There is a big focus on Jiu Jitsu, but if you want to learn how to defend yourself holistically, welcome to the Dojo.
