Dont forget to visit this cultural icon of Columbus! I learned so much about portrait history, furniture, and culture of Columbus by coming here. Its not just history, they have art by featured African American artists that I had never heard of, and can now appreciate thanks to my exposure here. I wasnt able to see the uppermost level, but it looked interactive and had beautiful symbolism. Too bad my kid lost his temper and I had to leave early!
Beautiful gallery! From the outside I expected it to be a small collection of boring work but I was wrong! They had quite a bit of work to offer! There was also a childrens room for them to interact and play, which I thought was a genius idea. If you enjoy museums and visiting Columbus, this is a place to see!
Ive never been to the Columbus Museum is been there for a few good years as much as I love art in history it is full of it it has a lot of good interesting paintings in history of the Civil War Indians black history White History you name it I was very pleased with the attractions that were there I would highly recommend anyone to go and see the artifacts in the paintings that they have at this Museum it was very interesting I will go back there is a lot to see wow!!!! Some of these pictures of the girls were done by students at the school in Harris County and some of the others are done by Elementary and the others are known painters an unknown painters as far as I know it is free!
I made a blown glass pumpkin! Kelly Robertson was the glass artist teaching the class and he was wonderful. when picking colors I ask for a certain color for the stem that he had not brought, and he ended up mixing some other things and making a custom blend to try and get the color for my pumpkin stem similar to the one I wanted. He showed us how we were going to do everything and helped us, so that there was no way that we would end up with a wonky looking pumpkin. We had brought a 10 year old with our group and he was wonderful talking to her at her level and not overloading her with information and making sure that her pumpkin came out just as good as the adults Pumpkins did. Case friendly and outgoing and loves to talk to people. The next day when I went to go pick up my pumpkins, even though he was helping prep for a class he recognized me, an impressive feat since I had gone the day before wearing old jeans and t-shirt my hair pulled back in ponytail and the day that I picked up my pumpkins waa Sunday so my hair was down, makeup on, and in a dress and heels. and I know that he really knew who I was because he called me by the nickname that he had given me, Birmingham. I cannot wait for Christmas when we do Snowman and or ornaments!
An exquisite find in Columbus GA. We entered the family exhibition of the surrounding area and who they were. The audio stories were awesome. The stories are heartfelt and personal, just wonderful. The history from 10000 years ago was short and could be updated with more details. I visited the LSU Natural history museum which added iPads with background information to the exhibition. All and all a great spot, I will return when back to the area.
My four year old daughter thoroughly enjoyed the Transformations area for children. At this time, reservations are required due to COVID-19 protocol. We picked the 10 am-12 pm time slot and we were the only ones there. Overall, the museum is an educational and relaxing experience. Also, the staff is very friendly and customer service oriented.
Small museum with a treasure of local artists and artifacts, as well other American artists such as Lee Krasner and Alice Neel and many others. Museum entry is Free (please leave a donation at the donation box). There’s a modern gallery and an American gallery that focuses on early Columbus area prominent people, which leads to a large section American artists. There is Columbus history gallery as well. Nice gift shop.
Always have a great time at the museum. Its a little different now you have to schedule your time morning or night with your party of at least 15 people. Also, we were unaware that our while party had to be present but we still manged to keep our appointment. The kids had fun but make sure to not take off your mask while youre along with your party the security women got on to us about it
Covid has changed the experience. The children are no longer allowed in the children area dpwnstairs, the front desk attendant stated. But then, as we walked through the exhibits, I was told by very nice CM employee that she (the attendant) could approve us to go down since it was just us. Oh really? Hmm, why did she just tell us no? How is it determined who goes and who doesnt? A family favorite now marked of my list. Favoritism, partiality, pick and choose does not get participation or support from me. One for all and all for one! My Grandson enjoyed it anyway, I made sure of it!
Thats a Great museum! Its totally free and they have so much to see. They also have a part just for children, where they can paint, they have color books, they can play with puppets and wear costumes. I had a Great time with my nieces. Outside theres like a botanic garden where you can take a walk and maybe enjoy a picnic. The front desk is so nice and helpful and they have special galleries every certain time... I recommend it to go with all your family!
The staff was very friendly and helpful. The at was very interesting and I enjoyed moving through each space of the three floors. I went with my teenage son and I wish I had more time to spend there! The current featured artist was very intriguing! We will definitely return soon!
I attended the 1 day sale and they had lots of great items! Everything was very well organized - the only issue was that their internet went down, and since I didnt have cash, they are holding my purchase for me to come back and pay! The staff has always been very helpful and polite
Great place to visit. Always new exhibits to see. Large play area for the kids with fun and educational things for them to do. My daughter loved this place when she lived in the Columbus area. Many fun memories there. Its also free. I recommend leaving a donation to ensure this place stays up and going for future generations to enjoy. Good little day trip for the family. Super clean everytime I have visited this location.
Just left this museum...I travel all over the U.S. and havent ever meet a more rude bunch of staff. The staff was overly aggressive at chastising imagined rule infractions. They followed/stalked visitors as they quietly moved through the exhibits. One person touched an exhibit and was yelled at in front of everyone. I was told twice to put on a maskwhen I already HAD my mask on.My family and I left without seeing everything because being there was too stressful. Thank you for making art fun.
The museum itself was great but the entire time my family and I were followed and monitored. We and one other pair were the only ones in there and literally every room we were in a staff worker kept walking in. When I informed the front desk personnel, he asked me to describe the workers then wanted to give me a sheet of writing paper instead of an official review or comment card. I will not be returning here.
The Columbus Museum is a must visit in Columbus. The displays of cultural history of the Chatahochee area was superb and the art collection was an added delight. We used the Columbus public bus system to get to the museum; bus route 7 has a stop right in front of the museum.
There are many things under one roof. The permanent history collection is very well done leading the visitor through the history of the area. They also bring in temporary exhibits. These are always changing and lead to a different experience each time you visit. I almost feel like this is a well kept secret! This museum has great art on display, and fun kids area, and more. I will have to go back to experience it all. I was very impressed that a museum with no admission fee was so wonderful! I cant wait to go back and take my daughter.
The museum could use a refresher or update, but its well worth a visit. I would personally like more Columbus history similar to the first section and dull down the art section, by no means get rid of it. Just more Columbus and less in the other sections. The live performance I saw was more annoying than enjoyable. Maybe use a closed room instead of main walling area. Look very much worth a visit.
Im not qualified enough to rate a museum, but I can tell you that the historical portion is interesting if you care about Columbus. There are some pieces that never leave though. The special exhibits upstairs are always fun though. Ive been to bigger and better, but its all about the content and size of the museum honestly.
The Museum has many new and old art inside. Each piece tells a story of their own, its calming to walk around inside the Columbus Museum. Recently I saw a painting that left me confused because it was a yellow canvas with a black line that went to the edge of the canvas but didnt form a square it left me curious as to what the artist was trying to show and what they were feeling. It was beautiful to walk through the art there.
This FREE museum showcases great local and nationwide artists along with an interactive local history area. I really enjoyed the current Tuskegee photo exhibit and the beautiful grounds of the museum. I would highly recommend this place to anyone. It is really well done!
A wonderful place to spend an afternoon! Great exhibits, lots of history, a fabulous little gift shop with lots of unique, and very reasonably priced jewelry! And --- admission is free! This is a jewel in the city and a great place to spend a few hours if you came to town for the rafting but the weather didnt cooperate! :)
Great day trip with lots of stuff to see. I took my 10 year old son. He wasnt as interested in the art exhibits as he was the historical ones. If youre planning a trip with kids, keep in mind their attention span and interests. There is no admission cost, so that is always a plus.
My daughter and I enjoyed these gardens on a beautiful Saturday morning and it was great! Her dog, Callie, enjoyed the gardens with us. The many varieties of azaleas are in full bloom, along with many more flowering plants and shrubs. If only I could have one of each, I would be one happy happy camper!
The museum boast of the history of the local area but does little to give a complete picture of the past. Indigenous populations and slave life are grossly just brushed over. The childrens section does offer activities that entertain children up to the age of 10. However the activities do not seem to incorporate any of the themes of the museum.
The Columbus Museum is one of those hidden gems you always hear about. The place is free to get in, they have good air conditioning so it’s a great place to beat the heat. There is numerous galleries to visit and have a cool kids room with a lot of fun activities for the younger kids to do.
The Columbus Museum is really impressive for a city this size. Regional history is well represented. The childrens area is fun and interactive. The rotating exhibits are always so well done. Its a wonderful facility for events, too. If youve never been, go spend some time there. Its free. Its fun. You just might learn something.
This has been one of my favorite places to take my kids since they were toddlers and that was over 20 years ago. Today my third child (23) and I explored the gardens that beautifully grace the museum grounds. Wish we had come a week or two sooner when the azaleas were in full bloom.
I had the pleasure of having my niece Sweet Sixteen Birthday Party August 7th, 2020 at the Columbus Museum located at 1251 Wynnton Rd Columbus, Ga. What a beautiful building. The staff inside is even more beautiful, the way the staff accommodated and attended to my needs was just awesome! I highly recommend having any special event in the Galleria Room, and ask for Kelly. Kelly guided me through every detail and gave the best customer service. The price to rent the Galleria is worth every penny, and if you want to know the event planner, her name is Jamie Sims. Jamie took the party out of orbit with her talent. She was kind, professional and always had great tips and ideas. Jamie has a great support team by her side. They really work well together and was professional and kind as well. Everyone was so knowledable. Man! What a great experience I had.
Great place to visit, something for everybody. Kids loved the childrens area. Covers alot of topics for homeschooling; art, history, art. Best of all its free.I like to buy Christmas ornaments of places we visit and the lady in the store went into the office and found them for me.
The museum was really neat. I had gone there that day with my Dad, who is 78. Our whole family was born in Columbus, but My parents moved us to north of Atlanta for my Dads banking job. Only complaint : took a pic and, because my flash was on automatic she chewed me out. Probably wont return.
Ansel Adams exhibit very impressive. Check out this museum! Well laid out. Well thought out exhibits explaining thehistory of the Valley. Did I mention its free of charge? It was a rainy day but will go back to see the grounds as well one day. Gift shop has many unique items as well.
My Daughter and I had a great time. But and update would be nice. They room with all paints and so much more was nicely done. They have intergraded nicely up stairs. Also in the history of Columbus area as will. Hoping more will be placed in soon. We love how down stairs had pictures of all the children who painted, drew, crated and so on down stairs. The children area tho cant use a lot of updating newer epiment and so on. Also would be great to have a scearn wall where children pictures come to life.
Very community minded organization, probably THE BEST ART MUSEUM FOR ITS SIZE in a city the size of Columbus! Having called quite a few places “home” as an Army family, we’ve seen a few!!! Now settled and having raised 4 children to young adults here, Columbus is HOME INDEED!!! I couldn’t begin to tell you how many programs and opportunities we have enjoyed via the museum over the years!!! The children’s corner museum with so much to offer & explore, classes, summer camps, movies in spring winter & school breaks, art shows from kindergarten through college!!! LOVE THIS PLACE AND THE PEOPLE!!! If I was independently wealthy I would be a donor, but since I can’t do that just yet I just have to say, listen to this Yankee—Y’ALL COME!!! YOU WON’T REGRET IT!!!
We have a recommendation for a very safe, very enjoyable day trip (from Auburn). Yesterday we spent the afternoon at the excellent Columbus Museum. They have a fine regional collection which includes renowned artists like William Christenberry, Amy Sherald, William Spratling, Bo Bartlett, and Alma Thomas. The museum is quite powerful in its historical and artistic presentation of the African American experience in our region. Besides great art, the museum has historical components like window bars from the slave auction house. They also have an intriguing temporary exhibit celebrating Womens Suffrage in the region. As for safety, we were virtually alone in the spacious and open facility. Everyone was masked, bathrooms were perfect, and sanitizer was widely available. Oh, and Olmstead designed the gardens. 45 minutes from Auburn.
This is a great place to take the family, go with a friend or even visit by yourself, as I did. The museum has so much to offer, the exhibits they have on display are have to see the Eddie Dominguez: Garden of Eden Exhibition, Fort Benning at 100, Ansel Adams: The Masterworks, and Our Stories Live Here: 65 Years of the Mildred L. Terry Public Library are just tasty bit of what you can see. They also have a gift shop that is second to none in Georgia. In Columbus, Georgia this a must place to visit!!!
Great museum with a variety of exhibits covering art and local history. There is an excellent array of art genres. Many traditional portraits as well as more modern mediums. Some of the local history displays cover original peoples settlements, civil war events, Fort Benning history, womens sufferagette movement and more.
Love our local Museum full of really good exhibits and I love the architecture of the building. I am saddened that you never see a lot of people there because they have wonderful local artist and the exhibits related to the history of Columbus should be seen by everyone who lives here.
Celebrated Dia de los Muertos on Think Like an Artist Thursday at the Columbus Museum of Art. You could create your own mask out of poster board, a flower out of tissue paper, etc. Very creative way to help people become familiar with the museum and the arts and to also help their inner artist break free. :) Fun evening with friends. We arent big art museum goers so our favorite part was the Columbus Lego display which was truly amazing. Love the free general admission on Sundays. We enjoyed exploring the exhibits and checking out all of the works of art
As boyfriend and I walk into Columbus Museum today 10/12/2017 around 3:00 pm. Boyfriend was targeted the whole time as we walk around just looking at the Art affect. Three different security guard was walking around us and looking at us the whole we stay in there for 20 min and left cause a another Security guard came out of the bathroom with her walking talking saying yeah the guy in the white T-shirt ok I got him to tell him he can’t be on his phone while he was waiting for me to come the bathroom. But two different set of white ladys was on their phone didn’t said anything to them. We are very upset about this Facility.
Went for the Ansel Adam collection photographs but enjoyed a little history of Columbus, examples of local artists, and a beautiful garden designed by Frederick Olmsteads sons (landscape architect of the Biltmore Estates Asheville). The diffuse natural lighting in the museum is well used.

2021-11-17Best workshops. We’ve been already to the Fall and winter workshops for glass blowing and we’ve loved them. The marketplace is great too and so are the local collections. Well maintained and a “must visit.”

We really werent expecting it to be much at all bit boy were we surprised. The place is huge inside and it has so many exhibits. 2022-01-24Great local art museum, fun kids room with all hands on. We could have stayed there for hours! Don’t forget to take a walk outside to view the sculptures. 2022-05-15My family and I were visiting Columbus because our daughter is a student at Columbus State. She told us about the Columbus Museum and we decided to go. Well worth the trip. Incredible displays! Took lots of pics and videos. The only con was that the 2nd floor was closed - roped off. Other than that, we had a marvelous time and so much to see. Definitely recommend this museum to anyone in the Columbus area. Check it out, and its free😄👍

2022-03-24I absolutely LOVE this place. Its amazing. Please make sure you check out the local black history exhibit very nice indeed. I visit the museum every chance I get and im never disappointed. The receptionist was a a bit ?staid? in my opinion but dont let that deter you from going. Its definitely worth visiting..
