Ok first off M-Thur AYCE all-you-can-eat is made fresh to order. The sushi is fresh and great taste combinations. The service to start may be slower but once you get rolling the sushi keeps flowing. I suggest to try rice cake ice cream afterwards its a small sweet treat with just the right amount of chocolate sweet. Great roll names that fot this college town. This is definitely worth the stop.
Utage is a great place for Sushi in Athens, Georgia. The service was good, but the food was phenomenal. I had the 18$ special which I chose to upgrade with Tuna Tataki and rolls from list B. The Yum Yum roll and The Bulldawg roll were great. The Tataki was very good as well. The special also included soup and salad. The soup was some of the best I have had. If you find yourself in athens and like sushi you give Outage a try you will be glad you did.
Welp.......Ive be frequenting this establishment for a couple years. When I first got to Athens their lunch combination was a shining star in my life. For $10 you could pick 2 sushi rolls + a salad + a soup. What a deal! The price went up to $12 and I decided it was still fair, and held off on writing a sad review. Well, today I went and the price is now $14 and you can pick a soup OR a salad to go with your two rolls.I know I know...COVID, supply and demand, economics, inflation....whatever. The jump is just too drastic for me to be justified by any of that. Its not a bad deal now...but its nothing special. The service was always mediocre at best. Today they had one waitress dealing with 12+ tables (which I know is a COVID related issue - but still frustrating).
A+ sushi spot with great service! Restaurant was clean, fairly quiet, and made for an enjoyable place for a mother/daughter dinner. We did the sushi boat with 3 types of sushi, 2 salads, 2 soups, and 2 appetizers, and it was more than enough food for 2. Absolutely perfect experience! If were ever back in Athens, wed definitely go here again.
Utagi is in my opinion the best Asian cuisine in town and Im picky with Asian... their ingredients are just at that level of high quality .. the portions are ok.. Im a fatty so I like to fill up but taste wise its very good , and reasonably priced . Now on to sushi , Im no professional in that aspect , its just not my thing and iv only tried a few types of sushi..but within my experience it was fine .. I stuck to California rolls so Im in no place to judge their sushi really ... from here on out though utagi will be only choice for Asian
I love this place! I had never tried sushi before I went here and now I’m addicted. Pretty good prices and nice staff as well. If you’re new to sushi and a bit apprehensive, I suggest the Atomic Bomb roll! It’s cooked and I think anyone new to the world of sushi would enjoy it just like I did. I’m graduated now, but I’m looking forward to visiting Athens in the future just to grab another roll :).
The service is atrocious. Waited half an hour for green tea that never came. Went with a date. Food did not even come together. My dish came 15 min after hers, making it nearly a 40 min wait. Mind you the restaurant was not crowded. The sushi I liked. But it wasnt anything special. Dont know if I would wait nearly an hour for it next time, to have just average sushi.
I think, this place is a little bit more expensive than other places. Sushi here is awesome. Other food is just okay, not justified with the price. My friend and I ordered two different items and both were cold when it arrived. We asked if it could be warmed up, they did, but after that the fried rice felt hard to chew. They gave us a 25% discount for that inconvenience.I have one big complaint. I havent seen any restaurant who doesnt provide a to-go refill for soda, except Utage. So keep that in mind.Food quantity is not as large as other places with the same prices. Still, I will go there again for their sushi.
Really poor service. Me and my boyfriend went there for the first time, the other waiters were great to their tables; being taken care of immediately with friendly service, but our waiter seemed like he didnt care what he was doing, really bad with his time. We had to get another waitress to come over and help us because he rarely came around. The food was alright, no complaints there other than the avocado was pretty old. Will not be going back.Front door lady was great😁🕷
TL;DR: Pretty good for sushi, the other stuff tread with caution.I visited this place on recommendation from my sister who lives in the area. The highlights she mentioned were a killer deal on good sushi and great ramen.I ordered edamame and gyoza for starters and got a creamy pork broth ramen with tonkatsu pork and a side of karaage (fired chicken). My wife and brother-in-law ordered a variety of sushi rolls. Everything came out around the same time, meaning we didnt really have time to start on the appetizers.Pros: The sushi was beautiful. Lots of wasabi, ginger and soy sauce to go with the sushi. Very large variety and there is a great deal for dinner to get some the more expensive rolls for a better price.Cons: The broth for the ramen was pretty plain. For this batch it seemed like a lot of the spices and seasonings that would add dimension to the flavor was lost. I did need to request sriracha (only soy sauce was on the tables) to add depth to the broth. My egg was hard boiled so if youre a ramen aficionado, there wasnt a gooey egg. On a relatively quiet night the server didnt get our cocktails to the table until after the food had been there about 5 minutes.Overall: Come for the sushi. Great selection that frankly overwhelmed me. But maybe just get the sushi.
Updated - Ive been coming to this place since it opened some 20-odd years ago, and my long time favorite has become more and more of a disappointment. The prices have been raised while the specials and combinations include less food (no more soup and salad for you), and the sushi portions have become noticeably smallerl, and the staff less helpful. I get there are labor and supply challenges these days, but raising prices while offering less, and having lower quality service, surely isnt going to help right the ship!2019 5 Star Review -The only thing wrong with this place is the woman that is usually the hostess. My son and I once walked in at 9:28 p.m. apparently their last call for sushi is at 9:30 even though they dont close until 10. We waited at the hostess stand until 9:31 which she then informed us that we were too late. Despite protesting that we had been there before 9:30, she didnt care and she told us there was nothing she could do. The food is good, but overall the service is lousy, hopefully one day they can get their act together and hire a decent staff.
I have been a customer for about 21 years. Never once had a bad meal. The rolls are not the usual sushi bar menu, which is refreshing. Never had a issue with service. Only issue I have ever had is forgetting their closed on Sundays and trying to visit. This place remains the top tier sushi in a very, very large diameter. Thank you for consistency and quality every visit.
The ramen here was really poor. The bamboo here was also refrigerated, by the obvious taste. The broth was horrific. The noodles were overcooked. I am just rating the ramen because that is what I got here.I was here with a couple of friends, around 15, and we were waiting for our food. There were people who ordered sushi, and took around 30 minutes to complete. However, my friend and I ordered ramen and it took them nearly one hour!!That is absurd. Sure, there were a huge amount of people there, but one hour! Anyways, that is all I have to say.
One of my very favorite restaurants of all time is Shoya Izakaya in the perimeter. I was not expecting such a wonderful experience walking in, but absolutely everything we tried was delicious and comparable to Shoya, for an insanely affordable price. The fried rice is some of the best I’ve ever had and I’ll happily be back for the amazing sushi menu and very unique chicken karaage ramen! Thank you so much, Utage!! ✨
My cousin and I got food poisoning here and the owner argued with me over the phone about how no one else called to complain. He basically told us that since we only had one raw roll that there was no way it could have been from his food even though that was literally the only meal we had all day. The sushi was very fishy and way too sweet.
Oh my god. The sushi here was absolutely the best I have ever had. I ordered the pick 3 rolls thing and loved it. I couldnt stop ordering bc everything was so good and spent ab 50 bucks with plenty of food to take home. Best sushi in athens and best I have had so far. I will definitely be back and spend all my money here because Im Ant-Man and I have fat stacks.
My friends and I come here pretty frequently, but after tonight I think that may change. Tonight was happy hour night (as stated on the menus we were given) and before ordering we double checked with our waitress who then checked with the manager, confirming that we could receive half off our rolls, drinks, and appetizers. After eating and asking for our check our waitress (WHO WAS AWESOME) informed us that the owner had just told her they were not doing happy hour tonight. She was visibly upset, as were we as we would not have ordered as much food as we did had it been full price. We asked if we could talk to a manager or owner. She went and asked them, they refused to come speak to us but said we could have half off the 1 $4 beer we ordered. Eventually we got them to give us the happy hour deals. Additionally, I ordered a squid salad, which I usually love. However, this was the worst thing I have ever eaten in my life, I think it was probably old. On our way out I went up to the owner and asked him what the issue was with the happy hour. He simply said it was too busy for them to offer it. Well, if that was true they should not have given us a menu saying it was happy hour and told us we could get the happy hour deals before we ordered. He was incredibly rude, did not care about my probably expired squid salad, and I feel horribly for our awesome waitress and the other people who have to work under him.
Sushi is great. Service was absolutely terrible. Waiter was in training, but no one was bothering to check on him. I was there 45 minutes, and still had no food. 3 others at my table were served before my order was even given to the chefs. Being in training I understand, but the rest of the staff, and a manager, were walking around and could see, we were not being served! Ill try it again, when Im back in Athens, but my first experience was terrible! (Sushi 5 stars - Service 0 stars)
I absolutely loved this place. I ordered my favorite sushi rolls and much to my surprise, they were slightly different but much better. They added just a little extra to each to up their game. If you love sushi and sashimi. You might want to try this place out. The only drawback was finding parking and having to pay a meter with a 2 hour limit. I guess nothing is perfect.
My first time here. It was really good. I had hibachi and my husband has some all you can eat sushi if I remember correctly. We also had a few drinks and they were also nice. Our waiter was great, he kept our glasses full the entire time were there. I am looking forward to going back the next time we are in Athens. They didnt even seem to mind that our group set there for half an hour just chatting after we finished. Great place.
Always a lovely experience to get sushi here! Everyone is friendly, the sushi is incredible quality for the price, and the portion sizes are definitely enough to fill you up with a bit left over. Favorite sushi place in Athens by far. Highly recommend for a nice date that wont murder your wallet.
Awesome sushi place! We enjoyed lunch here today, and the service was excellent, as was the food. The lunch specials were set up very well, the miso was very nice, and the fish was very fresh. We also appreciated that the service was quick and our server was very helpful. For excellent sushi in Athens, I would highly recommend it!
Was my favorite sushi place in Athens. They have high-quality sushi and good service. Ive been here 5 times now, and if you asked me to give a review after my most recent visit, it would have been a glowing 5-star review that went on-and-on about their all-you-can-eat sushi.I just went again earlier today though and couldnt be more disappointed. Not only did they remove all-you-can-eat sushi from their menu, they replaced it with a pick 5 option that limits you to 5 rolls, and is more expensive since it doesnt include the weekday discount they previously had.Normally 5 rolls would be PLENTY, and I wouldnt complain at all, but they also cut the size of the rolls in half. So basically, what would have been an amazing deal of all-you-can-eat sushi for $16 is now essentially two rolls for $18, but comes with a generic miso soup and ginger salad.Went from being probably my favorite place in Athens to being somewhere I probably wont return to. No longer a good deal at all.
We stopped in for dinner while spending the night in Athens. Our dinner started out a little awkward when we met our waiter. Asked him how his night was going, and he said could be better then he went on to share a story about how a friend of his, another waiter, was busted by an under cover cop for something. Very strange indeed - he also struggled with the menu and couldnt answer a couple basic questions. That aside, they have a pretty expansive menu, to the point where its almost overwhelming. They literally have dozens of rolls to choose from. Id recommend ordering the dinner special where you get 2 kinds of rolls, salad and soup for $16. I tried their Roller Coaster roll and thought it was pretty good. All in all, being a huge sushi fan, Id like to stop in again and try some other rolls and see if we can hit the 5 star experience.
Peaceful place, excellent food. The yellowtail shashimi was the best I have ever had. The seafood ramen was amazing. The bowls are extremely large, 2 or even 3 people can share a bowl. All beers are bottle/can so not the place for a draft, but that doesnt bother me I dont drink. Very hearty meals and wonderful staff, we had a young lady who was new to the location but she was very sweet and professional. Wide variety of sushi to choose from, will be returning every year for our anniversary! Thanks!
My previous review was all about the unlimited sushi option, which I learned yesterday that theyve discontinued. Im bummed, but its understandable. It was such a good deal that it was probably unsustainable. Anyway, Utage still has the best sushi in town. Im always impressed by the quality of the fish. I highly recommend the rainbow roll- its the best Ive had anywhere.
They used to have all you can eat for $20. It was very good at that price. Then they changed it to 5 rolls for $20. That was still ok, though not great. Especially because they cut most rolls in half, and used half the amount of soft shelled crab in their spider rolls. Now, it is 2 rolls for just under $20, with soup and salad. But the rolls are still the same lowish quality rolls you would expect at an all you can eat. After going fairly frequently for the last couple years, a couple weeks ago will be our last time. Now it is cheap rolls sold at the price of premium sushi.
Went here on Thursday night, was very disappointed! Thought I had found a closer place to north Ga that served ramen. Sat down 10 to 6pm, there were mabey 5 tables total that were seated. Ordered drinks and food by 615. Ramen came out luke warm and not until 7pm. There were 4 tables that were sat after us that were almost done eating and not sushi, menu items that had to be cooked in the kitchen. Spoke with the manager, he said you ordered late and tried to blame us the customer and gave excuse. Needless to say. I do not recommend this place more there custom service.
I had the spicy tonkatsu ramen with pork. Ive been looking for a good, classic ramen bowl in Athens, and Ive found it!I like the feel of the restaurant; they obviously care about what theyre doing and put in that extra effort to decorate and make you feel welcome. The craft beer prices are good, and our waiter was maybe the nicest human Ive encountered to date.
Service sucked but the ramen was a huge portion and pretty tasty. The all you can eat sushi is gone and now its basically a rip off so wouldnt recommend that. Overall the place is okay, I went here before they got rid of the all you can eat sushi and it was awesome but now its just okay.
My family and I have been “regulars” at Utage for many years, and we love the sushi as well as the wait staff. The Utage Special Roll is our favorite roll and I’ve never found anything that compares anywhere else! Plus manager Amy always knows what we want and goes the extra mile with customer service!
A decent option for cheap eat sushi. Its a popular place that caters well to big groups. They have an all you can eat sushi option for $25, which is well worth the price, however, your fish selections will be limited to salmon, tuna, imitation crab and some fish roe (which is undoubtedly how they keep the price so low). The wait staff was excellent, even though they were clearly understaffed and stressed. The only thing that I held agains the place, was that it all felt kind of shabby. The carpet needed a serious vacuum (or just removal), the furniture and walls were pretty dinged up and needed replacing. Also the layout was a little awkward, where people waiting for a table were often in the way of wait staff. Overall I think Utage has a great price/quality ratio and it is the perfect place to a have a good night out with friends if you want to eat sushi on a budget.
Horrible service. Our waitress was high and had trouble remembering what we had ordered. She also had the people at the table in front of us waiting for almost an hour. They left. She also had the sushi bar prepare several dishes, and when they were ready she couldnt remember who had ordered what. She brought us the correct ordered, but kept coming back with different orders asking if we had ordered them as well....The girl was high as a rocket...Very embarrassing for her and for the restaurant. She made them look like fools. The food was OK.
I would say it is fairly good Japanese-like food. I can always find things I like, but everything seems to have a fusion twist, or seem like another cuisine (eg Thai, Korean) doing Japanese food. The edamame were fresh and perfectly cooked, the rolls were good enough but fell apart. Many dinners were like teppanyaki food on a plate with too much sauce (in my opinion, but Americans seem to love all the sauce).
Endless sushi? More like endless rules. Everyone else at the table must get the same thing. No sharing. Only two rolls to begin with, then only one more at a time. If you dont finish it you get charged more. Anyways, the quality is sub-par. I found a giant hair in my roll and no apology was offered. Manager was walking around oblivious to customers, and blocked my date in the hallway after she went to the restroom. Ive been here before, and it wasnt this bad. Try harder, guys.
If you come here make sure to order sushi. The other entrees are not that good. The ramen isnt good unless you get the chashu ramen. The tako yaki is delicious. The miso soup and salad were very nice aswell. Service was nice and I had no issues with the waiters. The sushi is the best thing here.
Ellison was a very and helpful waiter the sushi was good however the rice didnt have the bright flavor Ive come to expect from the rice wine vinegar. Ramos quite good and definitely Bountiful the flavors there were some what subdued as well. The chicken on a chicken teriyaki was cooked perfectly as well as the vegetables however again the fried fried rice lact the expected flavor. Over all was above mediocre and with Ellisons exceptional service is what saved the meal.
The restaurant, like many dt Athens spots, goes far back and is quite narrow otherwise. The seat looks very close together and claustrophobic but it was ok once I sat down. The waitress didnt pick up many of my questions and gave incorrect answers, but the meal turned out ok in the end. The salad is really good and the sushi is what youd expect.
Went there with my friends in a Sunday evening. Had Katsu (fried pork chop) Curry Rice and Japanese style calamari (fried squid). While clearly not on par with genuine Japanese stuff, both are actually very good by American Japanese food standard - they actually tasted sort of like Japanese food! The portion was also generous and the price was even better than reasonable. In my opinion Utage beats Inoko and Ru Sans in every aspect, although the downtown location is a negative factor for me since I dont live close to that area and it is always hard to park during school seasons.
They have an extensive sushi menu and the waitress was more than eager to help with any questions about it and was also very knowledgeable on the menu selections. Seating at the sushi bar or tableside is available. The chatter is at a minimum making for an enjoyable dining experience. The sushi chef recommended the M.J. Roll and it is highly recommended as it is VERY good. The prices for dinner are not as high as you would expect, but the quality sure is. Service is very good too! Great dining experience.
This place has really nice filtered lighting, which I like. Most places use harsh overheads which I can’t stand but they do a good job on lighting. My ramen was alright. Not nearly as good as ramen from the great ramen places in ATL, like Hajime. the broth was too salty and not good enough. The pork in it was just blah. The rolls were good but nothing special. The gyoza were downright disappointing
I was directed here from the Postmates app. I was not aware that they didnt allow orders from Postmates. The lady there was really rude in telling me so. I do not pick nor place the restaurants that are featured on the app. I only pick up and deliver. I get that she was frustrated from getting people from Postmates come in but I dont have a thing to do with that. Call the corporate number for Postmates to express that frustration. I didnt catch her name but she knows who she is.
I remember when I used to come here years ago, when the sushi chefs would greet you with Irasshaimase! I really miss that. I LOVE the Asobe Age here when its not overcooked, and the sushi is usually really fresh and good. The ramen is always on point from what I can tell, especially the tonkatsu ramen. The worst thing about this place is the music they play! Wish they would play more traditional music like they used to, or at least Athens music, but it seems like theyre trying to be both high quality Japanese food while appealing to college kids.
The food was disappointing after having such high praise. The Ramen was bland the sushi was alright and the teryaki chicken was just bizarre. The service was good which was the only saving grace. This being said, for having sich high praise locally I was sorely disappointed
So, my husband and I went to Athens over Valentines day weekend. The hours for lunch, stated online, were until 3pm. We arrived at 2:29pm and were told sorry, but were closed. We couldnt understand as there were still patrons in there eating and the lunch hours posted outside as well stated until 3pm... so, if a restaurant is closed, the hours need to be updated on the front door and online and the door really should be locked - no one can get in, yet people in can still get out... a neon sign (open) would also help for those of us who are not from Athens. Anyways, we had tried Utage 2 years ago and enjoyed, but I dont know if well come back due to the rude sorry, were closed that we were told.We went to Shokitini for dinner that night instead of coming back to Utage. From what I could remember of 2 years ago, I found the sushi and service to be better at Shokitini so well go back there... not sure if were ever coming back to Utage...UGH!!! Just overall a disappointing experience since my husband was trying to do something nice on our V-Day weekend (he knows I love sushi!!)
Was here for lunch and back for dinner. I would have given it a 4-5* if it wasnt for the general condition of the reataurant. Bathroom and carpeting need some serious attention.7/8/15Back in town... They cleaned and painted the bathroom. Now please clean or replace the carpet and wipe down the sushi bar...Keeping it at 3 stars for now
Had a BLAST! It was a game weekend and I had been working nonstop so me and my buddies at work decided to have a chill day Sunday and go drop some paper and go kayaking down the Broad River. That was such a trip! And to top it off we went to eat sushi half wet and definitely still tripping and had the best time! It is now the PSYCHEDELIC SUSHI BAR!
“My favorite place for breakfast”Bacon, egg, and cheese scrambler is my go-to and comes with a side of cheesy grits (okay quality), and THE MOST DELICIOUS FLAKY BUTTERY BISCUIT and raspberry jam. Id eat here every day if I could. Atmosphere is quaint, but its a popular spot so theres usually quite a wait!
My friend and I went today I ordered a salad and spicy crab rolls I was eating my salad and noticed there were two hairs in my salad. I asked for a manager, he came over I explained what happened he was not apologetic and told me if I did not want to pay I could leave. I used to love this place, and hate that he was not sorry so I will never return
Utage > Shokitini. When it comes to balancing price and quality, Utage is far superior to other Athens sushi restaurants. Ive eaten at most of them, and I still always come back to Utage because I get more bang for my buck and cant tell any difference in quality/taste. Keep doing what you doing Utage.
This place is actual garbage, I went there one time and the food was extremely bad and the service was bad too. It took us an hour to get our food and then another 20 mins to get the change after paying the bill. And that isnt even the worst part eating at this place made me so sick that I got food poisoning. please dont go here if you want to live and keep your dignity.

2021-08-09The food and customer service was amazing here and the environment was warm and welcoming. John Isaac was our server and he was such a pleasure to be around. We got seated right away and got our food so fast! My husband and I ordered ramen and the serving sizes were HUGE. Well worth the price! We love ramen and this is definitely the best ramen place in Athens that we’ve found. We will definitely be back here to try the sushi and other ramen!

2022-02-26Okay, so let me first state that I recently moved to Athens from greenville Sc. My boyfriend and I were looking for a sushi place that was authentic with great food. This did not fit the bill. I normally can eat anything and everything, albeit some textures I can’t eat. The fried rice my daughter had, was flavorless and had frozen veggies. The chicken Katsu curry my boyfriend got was flavorless, it literally tasted like unseasoned fried chicken with a curry that tasted like a diluted version of the real deal. I had two rolls, the fish was a fattier fish (they try to cut down on the price with a different cut of the fish) and I didn’t care for the texture of my other roll. I was extremely disappointed because I seen the reviews and madeMy decision to try to it out based off what everyone was saying. I will say, the service was great. Our waitress was really sweet and attentive. But If you like authentic sushi and/or Japanese food this is not the place for you. I’m gonna have to do some research to find a good place. Sincerely, not a Karen.

2021-07-26We had a great time at this Japanese restaurant just recently. The food was tasty, and the best thing of all was that it was reasonably priced. John-Isaac was our server, and he made the experience quick memorable. We look-forward to returning sometime soon.

2022-05-17We sat down and ordered our food at 6:30. There were no more than 3 other tables of people. We had a party of 8. 15 minutes after we ordered they brought out 1 of the orders. 20 minutes later 2 more of the 8 orders came out. 20 minutes later 2 more of the eight made it to the table. Another 20 minutes passed and they brought out 2 more orders. If you’re adding that’s 7/8 orders after 1 hour and 15 minutes. The 8th order never made it. Meanwhile, we watch 3-4 groups come in, get served, and leave. This was a completely ridiculous low level of service. To top it off the owner refused to come talk to us about it and made no apologies, despite the fact that he was the sushi chef that messed up the orders. He left the service people to do the apologizing. I won’t set foot in this restaurant again. You can bet your last dollar on that. If you want a good dining experience go somewhere else.

2021-09-19Good sushi for the price. Lots of roll selection. A bit dark inside for my taste.

2022-03-18Absolutely amazing. Service was great and wait time was not excessive. Food was 8/10 and Id also like to mention how great our waitress was. If we werent just visiting we definitely would have returned to this restaurant many times.

2022-04-09The sushi up there is great. The service leaves a bit to be desired but the sushi makes up for it

2020-03-12Im not quite mad, but I am a little disappointedQuick service, loved the waitress - prompt and funny and brought everything great.Food was not good though. Tuna rolls were more like tuna paste (look at the pic?).Ramen was a giant bowl of ramen noodles in a bland pork broth. Meh.Wont try it again, sorry.
